Not near as scary as the last one. An integrated unit? |

Ahhh, the rare infantry in frock coats. I read that a Connecticut regiment wore frocks at Gettysburg. They must have been very hot! |

John, Union Gen. Burling's ENTIRE brigade wore Frock coats at Gettysburg (before the battle and afterwards). There are other regiments in the AotP as well such as the 147th NY, 'Bogus Bucktails' etc. It was more common than many assume. In some regiments normally wearing Sack coats, the NCO's always wore Frocks. It must have been some sort of informal arrangement among the NCO's to help distinguish themselves from the rank & file. There are pics from out West with Union soldiers on top of Lookout Mountain that show it, among others. Don actionfront.blogspot.com "Who ever saw a dead cavalryman?" |
