A certain class of Dark Age Irish warriors wear trews, some to below the knee and some ankle length with a strap under the instep. I have found three illuminations in The Book of Kells of men wearing trews: An Irish warrior in trews in The Book of Kells, c.800AD An Irish soldier with spear and small round shield wearing a cloak and trews. A man wearing a round-necked jacket with fitted sleeves and ankle-length trews held taut with instep straps. Are there any more or bigger/better images of trew wearing Irish in The Book of Kells? There is a very clear image of a 'dog head' fighting a 'bird head' on one of the Pictish Standing Stones in the National Museum of Scotland. The 'dog head' wears the same clothes as the Irish warriors you are looking at. Cannot help with your question on the Book of Kells though.

That's the one. There a quite a few of them in the NMS I wish I'd had the means with me to sketch them. Lots of clothing and armament detail. The old Celtic texts are full of references to warriors as hounds, whelps and other canine metaphors. Ferocity and devotion to their lord I suppose. They expected to be fed too. I've no idea what the stone is telling us though.
