There is a very clear image of a 'dog head' fighting a 'bird head' on one of the Pictish Standing Stones in the National Museum of Scotland. The 'dog head' wears the same clothes as the Irish warriors you are looking at. Cannot help with your question on the Book of Kells though. |

That's the one. There a quite a few of them in the NMS I wish I'd had the means with me to sketch them. Lots of clothing and armament detail. The old Celtic texts are full of references to warriors as hounds, whelps and other canine metaphors. Ferocity and devotion to their lord I suppose. They expected to be fed too. I've no idea what the stone is telling us though. |
