A deliberately vague question as I suspect that the topic is broad and complex
In WW1, how selective could an aircrew be about how many bombs they could drop at one time? I'm not thinking of ones hefted over the side, but ones actually carried in or under the plane in purpose-designed racks or bays. Did the whole load have to go at the same time, or could pilots/observers drop a few at a time as targets presented themselves. Indeed were some lanes limited to dropping a limited portion of the load at a time? As it's a vague question I'm looking at everything from a couple of bombs strapped under a Camel, to the full load on a Gotha or Handley-Page. Thanks. |

Varied by type, but most weren't limited to all at once. The standard British Cooper bomb rack dropped one at a time – on fighters they usually fitted one under each wing, for 8 bombs total, dropped in pairs. I'm not so sure on German kit, but accounts of Gotha missions make it clear that they could drop selectively as it were. |

Interesting question. In our games, I always drop everything all at once, because a bombed up plane is a sitting duck, and I am a dogfighter

Caproni bombers could also be selective in the #of bombs dropped. |

The Breguet 14 dropped the bombs in pairs by the observer turning a crank. The full load (that is a lot of bombs) could be dropped in quick succesion by turning the crank fast. |
