"Major Loraine was a celebrated pilot during the dawn of aviation, notching a series of ‘firsts' in the early years of the flying machine and was a daredevil to the core who showed exceptional bravery as he fought in the Great War up in the air in a report ran by Western Morning News. The air daredevil, who coined the word "joystick", flew some of the first airplanes. He also was the first pilot to cross the Irish Sea in 1910. He was also the first man to land on the Isle of Wright that same year. being a daredevil, he flew off in a rainstorm wearing the normal flying attire of his days with only the addition of goggles which acted as his protection against the elements. He was the first pilot to do the feat. Additionally, he was also the first one to send a radio message while in flight
