Used to play Harpoon and was wanting to give modern naval computer games another bash. Was going to do a search type thing on the internet but then I thought that there were probably people here that could tell me stuff I need to know that I would miss if I tried searching myself. So guys – is Harpoon still about? Is it good? Are there any other games worth checking out? |

Harpoon is still about, However
I saw a game that's called command (I think). If you Google modern naval gaming you should find it
. It seems incredible

I've been seriously thinking about getting this game: link It was featured in on a blog called War is Boring where they gamed a scenario between the Philippines and China. |

The old version of Harpoon is the best, the newer versions suck and dangerous waters is not very good. It seems the harder they tried to improve Harpoon, the worse it got. I got the three game Harpoon download from MATRIX games and it never worked $60 USD down the drain. |

Here's what you want: Global Conflict: Blue. It's a sort of ongoing beta with lots of community development work ongoing. Not perfect, but enjoyable. Unlike Harpoon, in my experience, American weapons aren't never-failing one-shot one-kill one-riot one-Ranger vonder veapons. |

OK thanks for that, think I will try GCB before shelling out what is a huge amount for a computer game on Command. To slightly widen the question – does anyone know of anything similar for WW2 and WW1? |

Closest thing I of which I have experience for WWI/WWII is the Fighting Steel Project. I believe it's moribund now, but the files may still be available somewhere (and a copy of Fighting Steel can probably be had very cheap). |

You are missing a great experience with Command/CMANO. I was a beta-tester, and it IS everything that Computer Harpoon was missing. It is miles ahead, especially in building your own scenarios easily and quickly. I was able to recreate the classic Harpoon opening scenario, In the Gulf of Sidra (1xSpruance vs 2x Osa, meeting engagement) in five minutes. I couldn't do that on Harpoon without a minimum of 20 and five of those minutes would just be aligning the map and framing the gameplay area. The game has excellent scenarios, and the list of player submitted scenarios is growing every day – with some of the really nice gems from the Development Team and the real hard core fans. Multi-player is also implemented. |
