A Danish Terracotta Bust of Venus after The Antique, late 19th century, impressed mark P Ipsen Kiebenhaven Eneret, and impressed 696, upon a concave sided socle, 60cm high This is a bust. There is something about the convention of depicting only the head and shoulders that just looks "right"; one is not left wondering where the rest of her is, any more than one would do looking at a painting or a photograph. Three-quarter length sculptures seem to be popular nowadays, but they look awkward to me, as if the subject has suffered an amputation, or is standing in a pit. Also, if the face is contorted in rage, the rest of the body should be more tense. Just my two cents; thanks for sharing the link. Ron Image in my post found here: link |
