Came across this photo of a 3rd Infantry Division,15th Infantry Regiment's M3 half-track landing on Yellow Beach during Operation Dragoon. Can anyone tell me what the device is on the hood and what the markings are and what for on the side? Robert

That's an AA HT, so I assume the side markings are (overly optimistic) aircraft kills, and the thingy on the hood sure looks like an air raid siren.

I think it has the twin .50 AA mounting in the back, the markings on the side looklike plane silhouettes- kill/victory markings?
The apparatus on the front could be a cable laying system or an air raid siren…….I can't 'zoom' enough to be sure……..

I was thinking it was a reel for laying cable or wire, but it might just be a siren.

Thanks. I was thinking it may have been reel also. But a siren does makes sense . Robert

I zoomed in and it is a reel of cable and the markings are kill tags.

I have to agree. That many tally marks seems optimistic to the point of being wishful thinking

Yea, but who's aircraft did they shoot down. Theirs or ours?!?

It may not be that optimistic. 3rd Infantry Division fought in North Africa, Sicily and Anzio prior to its participation in Dragoon. It is quite possible that this is the total for this crew over that time though they may have had other AA weapons previously. Certainly carrying over the total to a new mount would be not different from a fighter pilot putting total kills to date on a new aircraft. Given the wire reels this may also have been a command vehicle or assigned to the HQ of the AA unit and may represent unit kills.
