I just dug out my Elite miniatures Napoleonic Saxon Guard Grenadiers to paint. While I was rummaging I noticed that my Saxon line infantry are in bicornes. Huh? I should have paid more attention when was ordering. It doesn't matter too much as I also have Calpe Saxon infantry (in Shakos) to be painted. I'm only painting up the Saxon Guard Grenadiers at the moment (in Bearskins). But I am looking ahead to the line infantry. What was the last battle where the Saxon line infantry wore the bicorne? The 1809 war of the fifth coalition against Austria? I know the Shako was introduced in 1810. |

Maybe the Battle of Wagram (5–6 July 1809)? |

1809 campaign still with hat |

Nice. That makes them contemporaneous with some of my other troops. So I can have a battle without someone being the odd man out. |

Wagram, the Saxons didn't fight at Znaim. |

Click on the link to see some fantastic pix of the Elite Saxons. I can't seem to copy the pix to this thread, but maybe someone with better computer skills can do it for me. The Saxon flags shown in the pictures were hand painted on metal foil. The pictures almost make me want to go and buy a large pile of Elite Saxons right now. |

Thank you for the link, Alten Jungen (as they say). The elite saxon guards are much better than those line (which are already very nice). They are charging, and very amenable to customisation, head swaps etc. The classic figures on that site are marvellous. I know Mike sold off some of the classic WHC stock before he passed. Good to see they are on living hands. |

What beautifully painted Saxons. |

The Elite Saxons look great. Any chance of cavalry of the Saxons of the same time? |
von Winterfeldt | 24 Apr 2014 8:32 a.m. PST |
those are Saxons of 1806 style – which didn't even fight in this uniform. In 1809 they looked differently, crossbelts, back packs, lapels hooked down to the bottom as far as possible, trousers. great painting – one of the best white uniforms I did ever see. |

von Winterfeldt, thanks. This is interesting as I have those figures, though not yet painted. To remedy these issues how about 1. Making a bit of cross belt over the right shoulder with green stuff 2. Widening the lapel so it looks like it is pulled further back (green stuff again) 3. Backpacks – they always wore them? Could use some from a plastics set. 4.trousers instead of gaiters? Do you think these models were made for something else and then retasked or are Elite just stretching their use beyond the practical (post 1806)? |

Elite appears to have recently added Saxons for "1810 to 1815" link Available in gaitors or trousers according to their web site. No mention about the type of head gear, I assume they are wearing shakos. Brownbear: The 1806 Saxon range also includes cuirassiers, light dragoons and hussars, IIRC. |
