"In 1999, 20th Century Fox would release a picture that could have been a great military science fiction film that mixed elements of Star Wars and Space: Above and Beyond and to a small degree, Enemy Mine and rolled them all into a space fighter sci-fi war movie. Not only could this have given us fans of military sci-fi a new franchise to invest in, but also, finally allowing for a successful video-game-to-movie property. After all, Wing Commander was one of the most successful and beloved computer video games of the 1990's, and it seemed that a translation to film should have been easy. Especially considering that Wing Commander full motion titles were considered the best of that gaming format. Sadly, this film that could have also been the best video game-to-film ever was transformed into . Pure . While the Wing Commander video game series, of the most part, were some of the best games of the 1990's, this movie has been called one of the worst sci-fi films of all time. This blogpost was getting moldy in my draft pile, until I started obsessively watching The Spoony Experiment and his review made me pull this one out. Everytime, I talk to someone about this movie, their face displays the reaction I imagine to finding fresh dog on their suede shoes

I was never able to even get halfway through the movie. I used to play the first edition of Privateer, also set in the Wing Commander universe. Another cool game. |

I enjoyed the movie for what it was--sci fi video game turned to sci fi movie aimed at teenagers. Didn't expect any more than that and wasn't disappointed. But then, I like B-grade sci fi movies. It would have been nice if I'd been pleasantly surprised and it was more than that, though. Rob |

Never played the video game so I guess my perspective isn't the same as those who did. I kinda liked the movie. Sure, it could have been a lot better, but for what it was I thought it showed promise. |

If you take out all the personal story, the special effects are good. I especially like the scene where an enemy ship's wreckage continues to move from momentum after it is destroyed. The attack launched by an attack ship hiding behind wreckage was also a good touch. The story is not bad, just excise all the emotional, touchy/feely, teen pilot c---. |

A B movie all the way . Never played the game but the movie had potential and just whiffed at the slow curve. |

Dom, Thanks for mentioning the second Privateer game, I'd forgotten that they'd made a sequel. I played the heck out of the first game, and got really exited when they released Privateer 2, but my computer just wasn't strong enough to run it back then. |

It was a blast – maybe a little too linear in the missions, but you could always ignore them and go free trader anyway, and it even had Brian Blessed in it. :-) |

Having not played the game, I enjoyed the movie for what it was. People who played the game hated it but those who didn't play the game thought it was ok. So it was doomed to fail. After watching the movie I did pick up a couple of the paperback novels. I enjoyed reading those back in the day. |

Well, at least Chris Roberts is back making games now. |

I'm surprised they found any backers for the movie in the first place. Seriously, who thinks, "I know— we'll hire the game designer to be the movie director! Sure, he's never directed so much as a ten minute short, but what could possibly go wrong?" In fact, that sounds like such a recipe for failure as to raise my suspicions. This turkey had the stench of "Hollywood bookkeeping" all over it. Wonder whose money-maker baby got this thing grafted onto its books

but those who didn't play the game thought it was ok. Not so, I thought it was pretty dire as did my wife. |
