What with the new Bridge at Remagen FoW gamers' porn magazine coming out soon
TMP link
I have coming to the shocking conclusion that I have NO Pershings or 76mm Jumbos! (I split a box of 75mm Jumbos with a friend.)

Given that the accepted size of a Flames of War "army" is a company, and the actual numbers used in "real life" was extremely limited, I would find it hard to justify having more than one of each. I would hope that the new lists will limit the normal tendency of gamers to add scythed chariots and Old Guard grenadiers.

Naturally the rest of the company will be Easy 8s, "normal" Jumbos, M4A3 76mm Snermans… It will be a Claudian mess, as Phil Barker used to describe Roman armies with circus elephants.

However, since our group will naturally turn to fighting Red Star White Star 1946 battles, I will feel justified in getting a lot of Pershings.

What does your pocketbook say?

McWong7323 Apr 2014 10:04 p.m. PST

Pershings for the win! But even I'd be hard pressed to get more than three of the new Jumbos.

Korean war crossover?

I think US players re going to be underwhealmed by there new toys
Too expensive to assault PF infantry
Too few to blast them out
Lots of German AT 15/6 to go through the front
Sure they can kill PIV's and Stugs but so can existing kit

Up to a company of Pershings in WW2. That was all that was deployed in the ETO by wars end. So you could have 15 (or so) of those beauties and you would have all that there was. grin

There were under 300 Jumbos. A small number but for FoW that is plenty for the tabletop. AFAIK the 76mm was usually a retro-fit so make as many or as few as you like!

Pershings are excellent support platoons for infantry based lists. They tick the heavy tank with big gun box that has been missing.

Glad to see LW coming to a close, but that can only mean a reboot of mid war is around the corner. Not looking forward to them republishing MW.

Maybe this is useful for a scenario. I remember once talking to a 2nd Arm Div supply officer who told me about getting the perishing's just at the end of the war, and trying to run a convoy of them up to the front to get them into action.

Why can I see allowing someone their SS Tiger/Panther fest, when suddenly the convoy arrives and they get to slug it out.

Lion in the Stars24 Apr 2014 10:42 a.m. PST

IIRC, the Jumbos were usually convoy lead vehicles, so I'd assume 1 per company, maybe 2 if someone provided enough booze for the battalion/regiment/division's supply guys.

There were 500 odd M36B1s, which were preferred for assault gun work compared to the standard M36 (the B1 was the 90mm open-topped turret dropped onto a bog-standard Sherman chassis, so it actually had real armor and a bow MG).

More then you need or can paint, is usually what you will end up with.

vtsaogames24 Apr 2014 12:37 p.m. PST

How many fit on the table?

zippyfusenet24 Apr 2014 12:39 p.m. PST

What you need is a couple of P-80 jets, to stuff them weedy Me-262s.

Disco Joe24 Apr 2014 1:09 p.m. PST

A platoon of each should be fine.

Good answers.
I just want to club German tanks like baby seals, like they do in MW. grin

I am waiting for Gamingmodels to bring out the Jagdtigers to go with my Tiger II's = apparently they constituted 90% of the German tank force in 1045 grin

John the OFM25 Apr 2014 6:07 a.m. PST

1045?
That's REAL Early War.

I can see a Vandal riding a no Bleeped text furry tiger.

Lion in the Stars25 Apr 2014 11:08 a.m. PST

Oops… how hte hell did I misremember "187" as "587"?!?

Only 187 M36B1 tank destroyers built. And yes, you'd better believe I'd take a TD platoon in addition to all the other swag for clubbing baby Germans!

Wyatt the Odd Fezian25 Apr 2014 8:58 p.m. PST

I'm looking at the same "problem", John.

I'm going with a platoon each of Pershings, Chaffees and Jumbos. I may not use a whole platoon at once, but then again I might. If there's even the slightest chance you might find yourself gaming a Korean War game (say by using your WW2 and someone else's Soviets) then you're better prepared.

Oh, I'd only do 1 76mm Jumbo, not more than 2. (Actually, I'd try to rig magnetized gun barrels, assuming that the mantlets are the same)

5 Jumbos of all types would be a gratuitous excess, unless I was planning on fielding an entire armored battalion.
