I am looking for a system
scifi rpg
.lite. What I want is something that reminds me of my days playing ad&d in the 80's..but for scifi
It would all be for solo gaming.but I want some character progression What I want is tactical miniature combat with character progression And ready made npcs like traveller used to have
but I don't want rolling up a character to take 4 days like in a time of war(battletech).. I would like the combat to be easy to handle, character advancement
.. I have tried traveller little black books, but did not feel there was much character advancement..skills after mustering out. Tried a time of war, too crunchy Is 2300 ad any good
.I would like a good lite system that could handle all my skirmish needs and still reward me with character progression and a little good backstory and narrative
..would like a lot of aliens and create your own stuff so I can put all these 15 mm goodies to use I know it is hard to find one system for everyone, but I have never looked at 2300ad Or some of the d20 stuff Any help? Even Star Wars |

Star Wars for the D6 system might be for you it you can find it. It even had a miniatures battle component. |

Is that different from d6 space? I may just use savage showdown, but wanted a system with a background and character advancement |

Take a look at Star Frontiers, and the rules the last I know of are free in PDF form, could fit what your looking for. :-) |

D6 Space is like Star Wars but more generic, with the SW specific stuff pulled
but there's a lot of room there to expand and build your own whatevers, from ships to aliens and more. And there are advancement mechanics for improving skills, abilities, advantages. It does, I think, require a certain level of start up effort though, since it is totally generic. I don't remember a bestiary or shipyard included in the book so in addition to characters you'll need to do a level of world building to get a playable environment. I think the big tradeoff in what you're looking at is in lite rules vs advancement mechanics. Too lite, there's no advancement; solid advancement usually implies crunchier rules. |

You might look at 5150 Urban Renewal: link Some AAR's: link And the forum if you want to ask questions: link Characters have a Rep value (2-6) which can go up or down. Not as detailed as Traveler, but you can get a few adventures in a short period of time. |

Classic Traveller does have rules for advancement in Book 2 altho it is a very slow process I remember reading a Traveller review which mentioned that characters are not rewarded with extra abilities but with 'Knowledge of the Setting' Secret of the Ancients comes to mind or who is the real power behind the scences kind of stuff but if you want character skill advancement to run more quickly there are any number of ways to do so |

Stars Without Number is an OSR scifi game that gets lot of good word of mouth. There's a free version on DriveThruRpg link There are a good number of supplements for it, exploring different flavors of scifi. Star Frontiers is another fun one, there's tons of free stuff available for it too. Personally, I always liked that Traveller had little mechanical character advancement
with most of it coming in-game instead by way of equipment and connections and reputations. Who cares if I my strength hasn't ticked up, I met a guy who will sell me military-grade weapons for my spaceship! The escalating HP and raw abilities of D&D were one of the reasons I turned away from level/class systems long ago
and have only recently returned by way of the OSR games and the generally low-powered sorts of play many of them embrace. |

You should also look at Savage Worlds, it's based on a miniature system and they have a cool Pulp Sci-Fi expansion called "Slipstream" |
