British Colonial action on India's lawless border, using The Sword & the Flame rules, 25mm figures. Just to give the British players more to worry about, I introduced a special playing piece: Young Winston Churchill, having again pulled strings to get into action. The British gain points for Young Winston achieving great things (shooting foes, winning close combats, etc.) but suffer a major hit if he's lost. Will he survive to save the world 40-plus years later? New photo album uploaded to the Great Hall Games (Austin, TX; our host) forum, here: link Or maybe here instead (gateway page): link Click on the pictures to expand them. NW Frontier colonials, April 13, 2014 (or was it 1897?) Young Winston versus the Pathans! And a near-run thing it was, too. |

"Pathans clash with British on the Peshawar railway!" Urgent despatch to the Northern Star Dateline 1897 -- reported by R. Kipling, senior correspondent It is reported this week that Her Majesty's forces have responded to the cutting of the Peshawar rail connection and kidnapping of several railway workers by Pathan tribesmen in the most vigorous way possible, by sending a punitive expedition to disperse the hostiles, rescue the captives, and restore British power in this disputed region. A sharp clash took place Sunday last near an abandoned hill village overlooking the site of the railway blockage, where the crafty Pathans had laid an old fieldpiece in hopes of firing upon any train unfortunate enough to encounter their barricade of tumbled boulders and debris. Luckily our Scottish and Gurkha infantry were able to come up on the Muslim fanatics from an unexpected direction and push them back from many of their positions in the hills, and put the gun out of action. But the Pathans, it must be admitted, fought like tigers and a rain of bullets took its toll of our brave soldiers. It was seen that young Lt.. Winston Churchill, seconded from the 4th Hussars at his urgent lobbying and that of his esteemed mother Lady Churchill, was in the thick of the action among a platoon of Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, and by his own accounting shot "at least a dozen" hostiles and "personally defeated" a half-dozen more in hand-to-hand combat that resulted when his unit was charged by sword-wielding foes. (Note to the Gentle Reader: I cannot vouch for the accuracy of these claims by Lt. Churchill but I am sure his honesty is impeccable in spite of his ambitions to stand for political office in times to come.) Our gallant soldiers were at length compelled to take defensive positions in the face of superior numbers as the Pathans were reinforced by a stream of allied tribes from adjacent valleys, and after darkness put an end to the fighting the expedition made a strategic withdrawal from the region. It is feared that our force's losses were not inconsiderable, and it is with regret that this reporter notes that the wretched captive railway workers have not been recovered. Still, the perfidious tribesmen have been taught a stinging lesson and they will not again dare disturb the peace in this district. |
