Following up on a thread I started earlier this week I am working on culling the war game hobby collection down to something that is reasonable, manageable, and will make the hobby fun for me again.

Here is the link from that thread if you are interested:
TMP link

Anyway I currently have the following in 28mm

North Africa WW II Germans, British

Spartans and other Ancient Greeks

Vikings and Normans

Hundred Years War English

War of the Roses

Later Middle Ages Holy Roman Empire

English Civil War both Parliamentarian and Royalist forces

Tons of 40K Chaos Space Marines, Marines, Eldar, and even some Tau

LOTR GW figures (LOTS)

A huge Warhammer Fantasy Chaos force that I have tried to sell and no takers

Warhammer Fantasy Bretonnians

Warhammer Fantasy Lizardmen

Some bits and bobs of Warhammer Undead and High Elves

Various 28mm Science Fiction models

Wild West figures

A good size collection of Ngoni, Colonial Germans, Askaris, Rugga Rugga, Gordon Highlanders plus other figures and such for either Colonial era games or Victorian Science Fiction, or doing African Safaris or Dino Safaris for that matter

Enough ACW Confederates to start a regiment plus some Iron Bridgade

Various fantasy figures for games of Pathfinder or D&D

Gladiators

15mm

A good size collection of tanks and infantry for 15 mm Science Fiction

WW II for North Africa German, Italian, and British Commonwealth

Carthaginians

40 mm

Vikings

Beginning of forces for American and British/Canadians for War of 1812

Other:
A nice size Warmaster Chaos force

A Battlefleet Gothic Chaos force

A good size collection of Miniature Building Authority European and Middle Eastern models

It is perhaps easier to talk about what I want to keep for now.

Keeping:
North Africa WW II Germans, British (most of this painted and has gotten in plenty of games)

Spartans and other Ancient Greeks (again mostly painted and gotten in plenty of games have considered adding to this with Persians and more)

Vikings and Normans (Vikings are pretty much done and played in lots of game and recently have gotten new game time with SAGA. Normans are coming along nicely)

Later Middle Ages Holy Roman Empire (Yep painted and has gotten in lots of play time)

English Civil War both Parliamentarian and Royalist forces (much of this is painted and the collection continues to grow and get in game time from scenarios I run for friends and at conventions)

The Colonial/VSF collection (most of this is painted but it has not been played very much; however, I love the period and would like to see this collection get its chance)

Wild West figures and Gladiators (no they are not run together) however this is a small collection, is painted, and it takes up little storage space.

Various fantasy figures for games of Pathfinder or D&D (gets in lots of game time even if most of it is not painted)

15 mm Science Fiction (Love this genre and it gets in plenty of game time also easy to transport)

Warmaster Chaos army and the Battlefleet Gothic army because they are painted, take up little space and while they do not get played often, when they do it is always a good time.

Everything else including selling off the MBA (models because there are lighter and just as nice options available now such as Sally4th and Game Crafters) I am willing to part with. I might consider keeping a portion of the Lizardmen for VSF games.

In some ways I feel I could pare this down even more. So thoughts, do you want to share your list and what you feel you cannot part with?

Thanks

kallman22 Apr 2014 1:46 p.m. PST

Crap left off the EIR Roman stuff in 28mm. Yes it could go as well.

fred12df22 Apr 2014 2:07 p.m. PST

Crikey! You make me look focused and disciplined.

I can see why you want to focus on key areas and free up both actual space, and thinking space.

dBerczerk22 Apr 2014 2:10 p.m. PST

I am looking for Games Workshop "Man o' War" Bretonnian ships, particularly the "Corsair Squadron," if you should uncover any such gems in your quest.

Yes, it seems inevitable that we are ultimately forced to specialize and limit ourselves to particular scales and periods.

I've pretty much abandoned my 1/2400 WWI naval and 15mm Napoleonics, Crimean War, and ACW collections. I'm trying to limit myself to my current 28mm AWI, 25mm Napoleonic, 54mm WWII, and Man o' War naval addictions.

kallman22 Apr 2014 2:18 p.m. PST

Hey fred12df there are those who participate on this forum that have it worse than me. Yes I need to get it down to just a few areas. I am considering hauling it all up to Historicon and seeing if I can sell it at Walley's Basement.

Tom Reed22 Apr 2014 2:25 p.m. PST

I just recently went on a buying binge. Last night I looked at the almost covered kitchen table and realized that I have overdone it and find myself wanting to sell off some stuff.

Personal logo Endless Grubs Supporting Member of TMP22 Apr 2014 3:06 p.m. PST

First--if I had a nickle for every wargaming-out-of-control-purchase intervention we had for Tom Reed back in Champaign. . .

Second--Don't feel too bad, Manticore. There a lot of us who look around and see unfinished projects or games without opponents or what-ifs (especially as we age and hear the faint ticking of a clock). Ask yourself what you want to keep rather than what you want to get rid of. You didn't accumulate it all overnight and it will take some time to sort through it, count it, and prepare it for sale. What do you enjoy playing and who do you have locally for opponents? If all else fails, you can always work through a re-seller like GAJO if you do not wish to deal with all the listing, selling, and shipping.

Gear Pilot22 Apr 2014 3:43 p.m. PST

To me it looks like you have a pretty healty "keep" list. I have fewer genres of miniatures, but my "to do"pile is still over flowing and seems daunting.

So here's the list of what I have:
- 15mm WWII and WWWII N. Africa and E. front, representing pretty much everyone
- 28 mm WWII/WWWII US, German and UK
- DUST WWWII
- 6mm Sci Fi (Battle Tech, Renegade Legion)
- 15mm Sci Fi
- 12mm Sci Fi (Heavy Gear)
- 28mm Sci Fi (SST, VOR, Infinity)
- Space ships (BSG, Lightning Strike, B5, Star Trek)
- War Machine/Hords
- 28mm Samuri
- 28mm Pulp
- 28mm Colonial
- Clickey Battletech

The only minis I'd consider getting rid of are the Samuri and Colonial because I know I'll never get to them.

kallman22 Apr 2014 4:15 p.m. PST

Gear Pilot you make a fine point about how long it took to get here. Of course one reason I stated this thread and the earlier one is to see if I had a common perception, yep scored well on that one. I also wanted to see if and how others made the transition or did not. Plus folks have made some interesting suggestions and given me some ideas. I had not heard of GAJO until now.

Striker22 Apr 2014 4:35 p.m. PST

I'm on the end of the great culling and it's easier to not expand on projects that don't fit with my "keepers". Besides getting rid of projects I've also cut down to just 2 scales (6mm and 25/28mm). That way my terrain building doesn't get out of hand with oddball sizes.

I gave up on, and luckily never bought anything for, Samurai. So far I'm down to:
-6mm WWII (Europe only).
-6mm Sci-fi
-6mm modern (small enough investment to cut still)
-28mm Dark Age
-28mm early medieval (no crusades or Byzantium)
-28mm Western
-28mm 60s-80's modern.
-28mm sci-fi
-28mm pulp/dino hunt
-28mm fantasy (leftovers from rpg days)
-15mm ak-47 (could be chopped as it's the only 15mm left)
-28mm SYW (Russians only)
-28mm WWII (USSR, USA, Germans)

Let's see: limiting it to what has enough painted troops, terrain etc. to put on a game myself, my list would be:

28MM

  • Lord of the Rings: Gondor, Elves, Goblins, Orcs, Southrons, Haradrim, Rohan
  • Undead Roman Zombies: The "Zombies" board game in 3D with Hirst Arts buildings and 25mm Gladiators and Zombies.

15MM

  • ACW
  • Martian Empires: British, Imperial, Tribal, Lizardmen, Vehicles
  • Vietnam: USMC, Army, NVA, VC. A company of each
  • World War II (Flames of War and Skirmish): Germans, British, Americans, Italians, Soviets, French (Early War). I have lots of eberything except artillery which I keep off table for the most part
  • Old West
  • Modern: Lots of US, Civilians, Near future troops and gangs, insurgents, Taliban, etc.
  • Plains Indian Wars
  • SciFi (lots)
  • Napoleonics: French, British, Portuguese, Spanish, Prussians
  • Fantasy: Redwall, Various critters and monsters

6MM

  • ACW
  • SYW: Prussian, French, Austrians, British, Russians
  • Napoleonics: French, British, Austria
  • WW2: Germans, Soviets, US, British (Lots)

Misc

  • Age of Sail 1/2400
  • Ironclads 1/1200
  • World War I 1/6000
  • Space ships (toys/plastic)
  • Aeronef
  • War of the Ring boardgame with painted figures

I think that's pretty much everything. I have left over unpainted lead from these which I will be selling at The Warchest, June 7 in Wauconda IL this summer, along with the last few 28mm figures I have not yet sold off.

PS The Warhammer Chaos – got pics? Is it a good army or is it bits and pieces? I could use some new blood for Lord of the Rings….

Leadjunky22 Apr 2014 5:04 p.m. PST

Whitemanticore,
I would be interested in 15mm WWII. Email me a list if you decide to sell. Thanks. leadjunky At yahoo DOT com

I've dumped a lot of stuff and I am in the process of getting rid of my old Ral Partha colonial collection via ebay right now.

What I am keeping is:

1/72 WWII
54mm WWII
1/72 Imaginations Africa (60s or 70s era)
25mm ACW
54mm ACW
1/72 AWI
54mm AWI
54mm F&I War
54mm Old West
54mm Robin Hood (all unpainted and still in boxes)
Axis and Allies ships (lots)
Axis and Allies 1/100 planes (lots)

Some of the above may yet see the chopping block.

Dicymick23 Apr 2014 5:50 a.m. PST

Well I need to sort this lot out

6mm ACW OVER 400 bases for Fire and Fury.
15mm ACW lots
15mm Franco Prussian over 2000
20mm WWII Brits & Germans.
Loads of 20mm WWII vehicles.
28mm WOTR 600+
28mm Spartans & Greeks lots.
28mm AWI 800+
28mm Founndry Wild West lots.
28mm Sudan lots
28mm Russian Revolution lots.
28mm Darkest Africa the whole Foundry range.
28mm Early WWI Germans & British lots.
28mm Pirates, Musketeers,Wild West Cowboys, Indians, Chinese.
Buildings, trees, fences.
Almost ashamed of that list. It must be a bit like coming out. Here's the rub I've never got round to playing a game, I'm just a paint junkie.

kallman23 Apr 2014 6:37 a.m. PST

Looking at all the lists above perhaps we should start a swap meet.

Personal logo Endless Grubs Supporting Member of TMP23 Apr 2014 9:35 a.m. PST

There should be a single massive gaming flea market once a year in the midwest--dealers and private sellers welcome. Just tables of games and figs and books. Buy if you want or sell if you want or both.

kallman23 Apr 2014 10:16 a.m. PST

I am behind that idea Endless.

Personal logo Extra Crispy Sponsoring Member of TMP23 Apr 2014 12:45 p.m. PST

Coming June 7, 2014:

The Warchest. A one-day swap meet. Sellers pay for a table for the day. All others get in free. Will be at The American Legion Hall in Wauconda IL. Same site as Legends In the Fall.

We plan to make it an annual "make money to spend at Historicon" event.

Details coming soon.

Timmo uk23 Apr 2014 12:51 p.m. PST

@whitemanticore
That is a huge list of projects – I can understand why you want and need to prune back.

Doug MSC Supporting Member of TMP23 Apr 2014 1:41 p.m. PST

About three or four years ago I got rid of all of my collections, and there were many periods. I have kept only my 40mm AWI, ACW, Medieval, and Wild West, and I have been happy ever since. I do add to these collections from time to time. It feels good to have a smaller focus. I can play large battles with these figures or small skirmish games if I feel like it. Not to say that I haven't been tempted with other periods, but I remind myself that I can't do everything and it would not add to the fun I am experiencing with these few ranges.

Skipper23 Apr 2014 2:50 p.m. PST

Oh My, Oh my!!! Now I have to evaluate mine…..

I'd really like to get rid of almost all my 28mm stuff, but once I paint it its very difficult to part with.

I'm trying to concentrate on 15mm and 6mm, but darn if DZC didn't sucker me into 10mm for their game.

Skipper
