Martin is a hack like Rowling, liberally stealing from myths, legends and history to create a mishmash. Martin does great characters but he doesn't know what to do with them….so he kills them off.

Actually my favorite characters are all still alive. Even the ones that might be dead are still alive. I know the Hound needs to kill a certain relative so at least two are still moving around.

He just took the wars of the roses, added a dash of shortcuts and cheapskate and ran with it.

Nah it is GRRM, they are dead, they might be walking, talking and doing things but they are already dead.

I thought this was going to be about Les Rois Maudits by Maurice Druon

He doesn't do anything differently than any other great or popular writers do.

read James Barclay's "Chronicles of trhe Raven" if you want major characters killed off….

I don't mind him taking stories from history etc., every writer does that to one extent or another, it is the laziness with which he does it that bothers me. Lannisters vs Starks? Come on!

What it bleedin' says on the tin, lads: "All men must die".

George gave fair warning.

GRRM is a competent writer with an eye for historical detail, a knack for writing interesting characters and a feel for a good story. He is not a great writer. Then again, neither was Tolkein.

It's a bit of a stretch to say he kills off his characters because he doesn't know what to do with them, however. That sou ds like someone who hasn't bothered to read the books but who wants to look like they have.

GRRM has only killed three Starks and two Lannisters, to date. Most pf the rest of the death count has been of minor characters.

As far as I can remember, not a single pov character has TRULY died yet… Depending on your definition of "dead".

Frank Herbert did it too. As a young impressionable teen, I was Shocked, Shocked I say, when Duke Leto bought the farm in chapter 3 of Dune.

Maybe that is insight into peoples judging of Martin based on the HBO series and not the books…

For someone who never read the books, and who's only exposure was HBO's GoT from Season One, Ned Stark would have been considered the "central character of the series," (at least for Season One.)

Yet, for those of us who read the books, Ned was never a POV character. Important, yes, central, yes, but not POV.

People need to make sure they are commenting/judging the format they are referring to, because there IS a marked difference in how the books and the HBO series handles characters.

Ned Stark played by Sean Bean

That should have been a clue as to what was going to happen to him.

Plus with at least two more books the deaths are not at an end yet.

As far as I can remember, not a single pov character has TRULY died yet… Depending on your definition of "dead".

Trust me Ned Stark is most truely dead.

1. Head cut off

2. Played by Sean Bean

LOL Mithmee , spot on mate 8_) all in all its rough entertainment for all, its not Shakespeare gents, mind you his yarns are on a simular beam, yet I still like ol Bardies work :) It will never shine as bright literature for future generations, it'll make the author (and others) outrageously rich like the lady hack (who was not even known in the UK until the US found her 'talent') there will be more and it will entertain, and rather that than none eh?

Yes you need to read the books. The characters in the mini series are what the actors develop. For example the actor who played Joff was able to create a charactor that you just hate.

As for a story base there aren't really many to choose from, cops and robbers, war or historical. As it is said real history is stranger than ficton so why not modify real history.

GoT works for me, I am waiting for the next books.
