I have seen drawings of the Royal Navy manning a boat mounted Congreve Rocket. I was wondering did they ever take the rockets ashore and fight with them as part of a Naval Landing Party of sailors & Royal Marines? Also, did the Royal Marines ever man a rocket launcher? Thank you for your help. |

Supposedly the Royal Marines operated a battery of Congreve rockets at Bladensburg in 1814. |

And at Lundy's Lane in 1814, both during the War of 1812. |

Yes, as stated the RMs (unlike Europe and the Peninsula manned by the RHA) used rockets throughout the Chesapeake campaign in 1813 and 1814, in addition to Lundy's Lane, Oswego, Plattsburg and New Orleans. These were the rocket wagons and bombarding frame but they also could fire them from a small wall or bush and sometimes laying the rockets on the ground. They were also used on small skiffs (the sails were soaked with water) for raids on lake Ontario and parts of the St Lawrence, in addition to the many small raids during the 1813-14 Chesapeake campaign. |
