Very nice! How do you make the hover skirts? |
zrunelord | 20 Apr 2014 7:14 a.m. PST |
Thanks all, Hover skirts ? you mean the brown bottom part,Major ? I cut out the general shape out of 10mm thick Mdf ,filed it down to the roundish shape, smoothed it with sandpaper, then marked the indentations & filed them out with the thin part of a flat needle file. Then went over them with a round needle file. Mdf should always sealed with several coats of varnish, especially if are going to use water based paints. Z |

Do you find its hard to get a smooth finish on that MDF? Its a great method but almost seems _too_ easy ;) |

No such Agency, I guess it depends on the kind of finish you want.In the same way as you pay more for the finer 3D prints available on the market. I'm personally not a stickler to perfection unless it is a showcase piece. As I said in a previous post, if it looks good on the table then it's good. Having said that, if you varnish , sand with fine sand paper especially the wood grain ( the top is no problem as with any wood ), varnish again etc you will get a good finish. PVC is even worse, as can be seen in my Droids post. You can also flood the MDF grain with superglue to create a waterproof sandable material. And the best way is to try it out yourself & find the best system that works for you.The good thing is that MDF is very easy to shape. Z |

Thanks all ,glad you like them. I'll post pics as soon as they're painted. Forgot to add that the base is a standard size. The plan is to mix them with Rebel minis & Brigade hover vehicles.I'd like to get some Ainsty combat cars or Gzg Acav's also.Sort of a Hammer Slammers force with my tanks & spg's. Im my opinion, one of the best hover bases around is Rebel minis standalone base rebelminis.com/hoverskirt.html, so look no further if you want to make you're own vehicles but can't model the skirt. These are great work. The only thing that bothers me a bit are the hatches on the turrets. I don't think they are up to the same quality as the rest of the build. I really like the slightly higher sided look you have on some of the APC's. |
