"The Washington Post reported Friday that Poland and the United States would announce next week the deployment of US ground troops to Poland as part of an expansion of NATO military forces in Central and Eastern Europe, in response to the crisis in Ukraine. According to the Post, Polish Defense Minister Tomasz Siemoniak, visiting the newspaper after meeting with US Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel at the Pentagon, said, "the decision has been made on a political level and that military planners are working out details." The article continued: "There will also be intensified cooperation in air defense, special forces, cyberdefense and other areas. Poland will play a leading regional role, ‘under US patronage,' he said." The report makes clear that the US entered into the Geneva agreement with Russia, purportedly to "deescalate tensions" in Ukraine, in bad faith, intending to use Russia's supposed breach of the deal as justification for expanded sanctions and a further aggressive buildup of US and NATO forces in Eastern Europe aimed at encircling and strangling Russia

Well, if this is accurate: 'The Washington Post reported Friday that Poland and the United States would announce next week' plus 'According to the Post,' then it isn't the World Socialist Website doing the report – they're just putting their own interpretation on it. And who's to say that they are basically wrong other than people who are pro-US? |

And who's to say that they are basically wrong other than people who are pro-US? It's an opinion piece written by someone But the base news piece appears factual. Just check the Stars and Stripes article above. The interesting point here is that this is the Polish government announcing this and not the American one. Rather amusing really! As for troops, one company is truly THE LEAST we can do. Oh, here's an interesting article

" Yeah
right
Is the PRC doing the same from the East ? If one reads history, it would be pretty much impossible to effectively encircle and strangle Russia
Even in the former USSR's smaller size

The Ukraine needs money for it's military? Sell off the assets of the former president Viktor Yanukovich's luxury estate. Oh, and I'll be waiting for those 150 troops to get a stranglehold on Russia. I wonder what Bat Boy is up to

They are hostages to the good intentions of Putin. They are being put in harm's way to forestall any naughty behavior on his part. Their purpose is not to physically thwart any invasion, but diplomatically. |

that's how propaganda is spreaded
We've seen many times that Russian snipers were shooting poor protestors on Maidan, that Ukraine detained several hundred of Russian terrorists, "confirmed reports" of Russian armor on Eastern Ukraine, horrors about enormous build-up of Russian troops near border that even OSCE mission was mot able to verify. Speaking of OSCE, they found no evidence of Russian involvement in the East so far

Poand asks United States to deploy 10,000 American troops in his country. "Warsaw and Washington may announce the deployment of additional American troops in Poland next week, Polish Defense Minister Tomasz Siemoniak said following a meeting with his US counterpart, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel at the Pentagon on Thursday, April 17, 2014. He added that Poland would play a leading role in the NATO build-up of troops in Eastern Europe, "under US patronage," the Washington Post reported. He added that the US needs to "re-pivot" back to Europe from Asia to counter "Russian aggression" in Ukraine. Siemoniak earlier called on the Pentagon to deploy as many as 10,000 American troops in his country. Poland already hosts some 100 to 150 US military servicing a battery of surface-to-air Patriot missiles, which was deployed in 2010 to give Warsaw more confidence for hosting elements of the NATO anti-ballistic missile shield in Europe

the Poles have a lot of weapons of their own design/upgrading or from other countries than the US
so the US Military-Industrial Complex won't be making that much profit
"The Polish Land Forces operate mainly upgraded Soviet era equipment. However rapid modernization and downsizing of the Polish Land Forces is underway, replacing its extensive Soviet weaponry with fewer units of modern Western weaponry. The Polish Land Forces operate some 900 MBTs, mainly composed of the PT-91 Twardy and the Leopard 2, (Soviet T-72 are being withdrawn from service, only 379 will remain in storage until 2018). In addition there are over 2,000 IFV's and over 140 helicopters." And I highly doubt the US will deploy 10,000 troops to Poland
unless the Russians cross the border
then all bets are off
But again, I highly doubt that will occur either
So yes, as John OFM pointed out the deployment is more diplomatic then having much of a military value. And those troops(the 150 Grunts and 100+ ADA crews) are far from being in harm's way
at this point
and that probably won't change anytime soon if ever

I heard today we will be sending 600 troops to help defend Europe. Not sure if they will have weapons, or not, but should have at least non-lethal aid, e.g. MREs, first aid kits, etc. Best of luck, chaps

About 600 paratroopers from the Army's 173rd Infantry Brigade. Pentagon officials said that 150 of the "Sky Soldiers" from the 173rd based in Vicenza, Italy, would deploy to Poland on Wednesday. By the weekend, additional 150-troop units were to be on the ground in each of the Baltic states -- Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia -- for joint training with local forces, the officials said. link |
