"A painting contained in the Suleymanname, an illustrated history of the life and achievements Sultan Suleiman I (Sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1520 till 1566). The original lies in the Topkapi Palace Museum. This particular illustration shows that as early as the 1522 Siege of Rhodes, many of the uniform costumes of the Janissary had been established, and in many cases did not change for the 100 years or so. This painting shows three groups surrounding the sultan on the battlefield: •The Sultan's Bodyguard Archer, or "Solacchi", who had the title of "Peik ga for Keisaren" – 'goes before the Emperor'. (Claes Ralamb, 8 May 1622 – 14 March 1698) •As well, there were the Imperial Guard – Solak "Solak effter Keisaren", or 'after the Emperor' (Solak='left-handed') •Whereas directly behind the Sultan are the Janissary Court Pages (Icoglands). The only other group of Janissary, directly involved in the Sultan's military camp, are the Ztrhli Nefer (Armoured Janissary Infantry), which are discussed below
