Any thoughts on base coats for Austrians? I have been looking at various blogs in which Austrian figures are shown and find that those that appear to have been painted with a black undercoat look very 'dark'. Those shown on the "There are your guns" Forum site appear to be much brighter – as do the Prussians which are there, too. I appreciate that painting is a matter of taste etc. However, if there is someone out there who paints Austrians in particular I would like to hear your views on base coats. Thanks in anticipation. Well mine were done with a black undercoat although they were in 10mm scale- you didn't mention what figures you are going to paint. |

I'm painting 15mm Austrians (1800, so a little earlier than yours) and assuming your doing white uniforms
I've undercoated in matt black, base coat in a light to mid grey, and then done the uniform and crossbelts in white. If I'd been doing 28mm I'd use an off-white for the uniforms, but 15s need to be brighter. Pics here of mine

I did a black undercoat like I always do. Whether it turns out dark or not just depends on how many more layers you put on top. |

Any colour undercoat is fine to use, like Martin said as long as you layer in the paint correctly it will come out the same colour I use black nowadays mixed with acrylic paint flow to a slightly opaque mix then layer dark to light this will give you good results and depth , you could always split the differance and undercoat in a mid grey have done this in the past and works fine . Good luck Richard |

I black undercoat mine -Grey greatcoats for 1866 of course. Probably the quickest paint jobs ever and of course you need loads for the Prussians to mow down

Just a reminder: It seems that the 1866 Austrian greatcoat was dark grey, not mid-grey as wast typical in the Napoleonic Era. But not as dark as the 1866 Prussian trousers and greatcoats, which seem black-grey. And in any case, if you donīt want your minis to look flat and dark, you always need to paint them somewhat brighter than real (the color-scale effect). I judge my minis colors at a minimum distance of one extended arm. |

For my linen coated Austrians '59 I use grey undercoat, blocked in with light grey ( Vallejo Wolf Grey) and a thin ivory highlight. belts are in pure white over light grey. For the greatcoated '66 guys Its a black undercoat, wet coat of vallejo german grey and a drybrush of French mirage blue ( actually grey). The greatcoats may be a little dark but they match the look in the osprey book. All 15mm. |
