"Historians and firefighters are working to preserve a siege tunnel that dates back to the Revolutionary War in the South Carolina town of Ninety Six. In 1781 Patriots built the tunnel with the plan to burrow underneath the British-controlled Star Fort and plant explosives." link |

Thanks! That it would be brick-lined is quite interesting, given how it would have been meant to be temporary, but, perhaps, bricks might have been the most suitable material at hand. |

In the spirit of reconciliation I suggest we find out where Piers Morgan sleeps, extend the tunnel and set off the mine. Both nations can unite behind a common celebration. |

I have been to Ninety Six and will be moving close to it. Calling it a "town" is being generous! |

I used to visit this with my Father in 1972-73 when I lived in North Augusta. My father knew someone connected with the site. |

A brick lined tunnel at that location at that period? Something is fishy in that, for sure. Unless there was a kiln in the neighborhood at the time, I suspect the bricks are from a considerably later period (as the poster on the article comment section asks). I'm curious to see what results from this investigation. They do kind of look like adobe style bricks to some degree but I've never heard of a brick lined tunnel as a mine being laid, not even for the much longer and deeper mine used at Petersburg (sp?) in the ACW. |

@Emw: Might it have been a later drain or sewer? |
