The following Shapeways items are very useful for 3mm gaming:

1. Anything in Javelin98's 3mm line:

…use a detail material. He adds a lot of small detail.

2.This makes a great scif shore monitor/armored patrol water vessel. Would pass for Grav easily too:

3. These tripods rock…although I would only print them in white strong and flexible so the legs stay intact. They are scale-less and would make amazing spider droids for 15mm and upwards.

4. These make great trasit shuttes in 3mm. Going to paint them for civilan roles:

5. Handy turrets to uptech models, etc:

Since Oddzial's Thor artillery is two piece (mrls module is separate):

…I am using the latter turret pack to make some vehicle variants.

This is awesome. Thank you so much for finding this stuff and posting it. My wallet, however, is furious with you. :-)

No worries…I am making another run through soon and will post more stuff once I have it in hand :)

As a side note, make an account on the site and do not hesitate to contact the designers. Normally it's not a big deal to shift a scale up or down on a model. Most people I have spoken with are only too happy to rescale so you can spend your money :)

Many of the fighter designs on shapeways are also good for drones, GEVs, snow skimmers, or other small attack craft.

Thanks for the shout-out, CC!

Deltapa's line, for example. He hass ome robotch style valkyries that look like they would fit perfectly at 3mm. Expensive, at eleven bucks for eight figures, but I think they would make a nifty recon company for a mecha outfit.

His fleetscale mecha squad also looks like it would work just fine.

As a total newbie to shape ways, what material would you suggest for javelin98's models?

All of these are awful tempting!

@javelin98

No probs…keep up the good work!

@sharkbait

Frosted Ultra Detail all the way.

You have to gauge how much detail the model has. There are some vendors with really basic designs that will work in W/S/F plastic. The Tripods I purchased would be too brittle in anything else for the legs to survive.

Make sure to note which plastics have a grain to them. You might not like the finish. You can't go wrong with Frosted though :)

Sometimes you are the first to order something…and it turns out it wont print in the selected material or at all. In this event Shapeways will email you and continue filling the rest of your order. The bit that didn't work out is added as credit to your account.

@Sharkbait:

FUD is definitely your best choice, but Frosted Detail should work as well and is slightly cheaper.

Polished also works nicely.

I have ann idea to gets some Spartan games turrets from the Firestorm Armada game to see if they might fit. About £3.00 GBP for a pack of six twin turrets. There are triple turrets too. If anyone out there has them, maybe they could measure the turret dimensions?

Had a further thought about this. I dug out one of my 6mm Scotia grav tanks. I would say that Scotia models are on the smaller side for Sci-Fi armoured vehicles on average. It was 25mm. Javelins excellent GEV force on Shapeways has an average size of 13mm. Andries IV has a range of 6mm forces, but the smaller tank is 19mm and the turret is quite small. I believe that they would make large tanks in 3mm or could quite easily be converted by cutting a section out of the middle to "shrink" them by a few millimetres as desired.

Other smaller, non scale specific turrets may also work from 6mm, for example the plasma blast sensor turrets.

At this cale, you can alao make your own turrets fairly easily out of wire and plasticard.

Studio Bergstrom has some nice turrets and some really useful shuttles.

Here are my favorite shapeways stand-ins for fast attack craft like GEVs and snowspeeder…

@ cloudcaptain & javelin98 – thanks for the Frosted Ultra Detail suggestion. I'll be looking into getting some of these 3mm minis.
