…to Ukraine crisis.

"More NATO ships, warplanes and troops will soon be headed to eastern Europe in response to Russia's pressure on Ukraine, the alliance's top official said Wednesday. But NATO's efforts to reassure wary allies appear to stop short of establishing a permanent forward presence in the region.

"We will have more planes in the air, more ships on the water, and more readiness on the land," NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen told reporters after a meeting of the North Atlantic Council.

Among the measures to be taken include an intensification of NATO air policing missions over the Baltic region and more allied ships bound for the Baltic Sea, eastern Mediterranean and other regions as required, Rasmussen said. Actually, what he said is that Russian troops helped local defence forces to ensure safety during referendum, which is not exactly the same. I hope it is just misunderstanding during translation, and not deliberate morphing of reality by democratic press ;)

"Our servicemen stood behind the back of Crimea's self-defence forces," Putin said. "They acted politely, but resolutely and professionally. There was no other way to hold the referendum in an open, honest and honorable way and allow the people to express their opinion."

I'm with Light Horseman, If it's not an empty gesture what is it? It's not more sanctions, it's not the Black Sea, it's not insertion into the situation in any meaningful way.

Ok, Ok,… somebody make fun of that last line.

Like Stalin said. "I don't care who votes, I care who counts the votes".

And yes, the NATO equipment moved to eastern Europe is there to reassure the Poles and Baltic States, not to actually do anything about the Ukraine.

I have to agree tuscaloosa … I certainly don't see NATO going to war over this … at least anytime soon … Of course if it does some how happen … could be the start of WWIII …
