"Hoplites were citizen-soldiers of Ancient Greek city-states who were primarily armed with spears and shields. Their main tactic was the phalanx formation. They were primarily free citizens—propertied farmers and artisans—who were able to afford the bronze armor suit and weapons (estimated at a third to a half of its able-bodied adult male population). Hoplites generally received basic military training. The most famous of the Greek hoplites were the Spartans. In 690 BC, the Spartan army adopted a military innovation known as the phalanx formation. This new tactic proved successful during the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC and the Battle of Plataea in 479 BC, when the Greeks defeated the Persians. The Persian archers and light troops who fought in the Battle of Marathon failed, in part, because their bows were too weak for their arrows to penetrate the Greek shields and armor, and their own armor and shields could not stand up to the longer spears and swords of the Greeks

Wow! They make gladiators, too! Think of the skirmish game you could put on with THOSE! Out of my price range, of course, but I hope SOMEBODY does it and posts pics. Doug |

We have actually used 1/6 scale figures in a skirmish-level game, albeit a WWII-era one. (Yes I know this is posted in the Ancients section, but presumably one could do the same thing with other eras). We did it in conjuction with the old SPI board game "Sniper", and latterly with Two Hour Wargames' "Nuts", both of which cover WWII. We used a single figure per side to represent each player's "character", with the figure in a small vignette display over to the side of the game board. Since both games keep track of the state of each individual soldier from turn to turn, it was possible to pose the 1/6 scale figure to match its game state (i.e. kneeling, firing weapon through a window, or standing, preparing a grenade, etc.). Not essential to the game, but pleasing from an aesthetic perspective. I'm not sure I can post an image, as my Windows partition is temporarily screwed up, but will try
OK, this one represents a turn where my "Nuts" character succeeded in silencing an MG-42 which had been firing from a building across the street.

Thanks! I got my guys when the prices weren't as bad and I put some together piece by piece. I won't be adding any more warriors to the ludus as the prices for new ones priced me out as well |

That just means you have more resources to focus on building a 1/6 scale arena for them! Doug |

Lol, Doug, I actually did look into some 1/6 hex pavers but my wife caught on. Love to see more of the WWII skirmish pics!!!

Sigwald, Those gladiators look pretty good. I thought the first one was a real person until I looked at the skin again. WRT the WWII, unfortunately I don't have many images, as we put the whole thing aside in favor of (1) DBA ancients and (2) a WWI centennary (sp?) using 1/6000 Figurehead and the old SPI game "Flight of the Goeben". The problem with the 1/6 was that neither Sniper nor Nuts were what we were looking for, for different reasons in each case. Maybe next year I'll try again. MH |

A few friends have been playing the Bolt Action rules and we have been discussing doing a game this summer ith our own WWII 1/6th stuff. I'm looking forward to snapping some pics if we do have the game. |

BTW, Sigwald, if you ever start a thread for your WWII 1/6 skirmish topic in the appropriate forum (and if I notice it), I will post there. You might find some of our experiences useful for whatever you have in mind. Note that we were using only one 1/6 figure per side, even though each side was operating at least a squad in the game. So only the "main character" was represented with a figure, on a little "stage" set off to the side of the playing area. I would suggest the "WWII Discussion" board, under the land forum. MH |
