"A Russian attack warplane engaged in "provocative action" when it repeatedly buzzed a U.S. Navy guided missile destroyer in the western Black Sea on Saturday, U.S. military officials tell NBC News.

According to officials, in a 90-minute encounter, the Russian SU-24 fighter jet made a dozen low passes — ranging from sea level to several thousand feet — near the USS Donald Cook.

The crew aboard the Donald Cook made several attempts to radio the Russian warplane asking the pilot what were his intentions and sending warnings to remain at a safe distance, but the Russian pilot never responded…"

I'm glad cool heads and the professionalism of the US crew prevailed.

There were most likely 20 more fighters armed to the teeth, just outside LoS waiting to fire 100 missiles at the ship should it have fired at the fighter. Classic set up I think.

next time it will fly by and drop some drop tanks filled with water in the sea to make a big splash to get someone to shot at him. This is an old cold war game the Russians like to play.

Fortunately, I'm not the "King of the World" (TM). My response would have been stupid over the top, like nuking a couple of cities. That's why I play war games on a table with little plastic soldiers. Keeps their feelings from getting hurt.

Do you think that the Russians are itching for a fight that badly DuBray?

Ron W DuBray15 Apr 2014 12:04 p.m. PST

Nope but they would most likely use the mess (if they had shot at the fighter) to force all the US ships out of the area and make the US look like warmongers monsters. ether way its a set up and shooting first would be a very big mistake in this game.

Anything outside of 12 miles from the coast is fair game. We've done to them and visa-versa. Used to happen all the time. Just a game, and frankly, it's good practice.

Flocks of anti-aircraft homing pigeons, or seagulls are the answer.

A shame if a bunch of them just happened to take off while the Sukhoi was on a low-altitude run at the same time.

Birdstrikes happen, and we surely can't be blamed for those.

The Russians were just reminding everyone who really owns the Black Sea. Nothing more, nothing less…. And the odds of it turning into a shooting match were nil and none (although everyone's nerves got tested).
