"According To official MoD figures released in June 2013, the British Army has 501 horses and 334 tanks. No one (apart from Liberal Democrat Danny Alexander) has suggested cutting the number of horses. The annual cost of maintaining our mounted regiments is a drop in the ocean compared to the revenues they help bring in. When it comes to the comparatively low number of Main Battle Tanks, no one has suggested that we need less

can't have to many tanks, they wear out and people blow them up. so having extras in storage is a good thing. Just like ammo. |

Facsinating article – 'Capability Holiday' – Lol! I'd not heard that one before I left
Basically the Armed Forces are reaping the results of over a decade of pernicious overstretch where a Force designed to fight one major or two minor operations was held to 2 major and several minor committments
Aircraft carriers without planes, Armoured Regiments without tanks
Its a good job Europe isn't facing a resurgent aggressive neighbour with a track record of interfering with its neighbours sovereignty, isn't it

Do they intentionally pick horses of similar colours? |
Stryderg | 14 Apr 2014 5:37 p.m. PST |
No, they'll take any color horse. Nothing a black base coat and a lot of washes can't fix. :) |

Excellent article. Very thought provoking. This seems to be the path that the US Army is following. We just need the light recon vehicles. |

We've had more horses than tanks since the late 90s iirc |

Saltflats, the horses within each gun-team of the King's Troop match each other, with each team being steadily darker than the last. As you can see from the photo above, the lighter bays are on the left, graduating through to darker bays on the right. In the Household Cavalry I seem to remember that they use only very dark bays/blacks, with greys for trumpeters and kettle-drummers. |

'with each team being steadily darker than the last' Then why is gunner Mabojo in the middle then? (Said in jest gents) Those horses btw look in beautiful condition (most likely in better condition than the tank hardware Im sure). Cheers all |

Now now
;) It doesn't stop with matching horse colours
I knew four brothers in school – two pairs of identical twins born about 18 months apart and all four of them looked alike. They all joined the RHA and all ended up in the King's Troop, where they were all allocated to the same gun! The Troop Sergeant Major must have thought that all his Christmases had come at once, to have soldiers who all looked exactly the same. He must also have suspected that the British Army must have got a good deal with Kamino

What, no mountain bikes? I'll bet they are a lot cheaper to maintain than horses. Charge of the Light Brigade Part Deux, anyone? |
