Hey all,

I'm wondering if the TMP community can recommend a good book on the tactics of the American Revolution. I have a good understanding of the overall war, but I really need to brush up on different fighting formations used in the war. I want to get a sense of things like, "how often did British line fight in close order vs a more open order formation?" Or for example, "did British loyalists know how to fight in close order?"

Let me know and thanks. This will help me greatly when it comes to basing my figures, and how to think about formations and how they would be used in my own games.

Thanks all!

J

"With Zeal and with Bayonets Only" by Matthew Spring is the book you want. It only covers the British army, but it's the best book on AWI tactics available.

For overall war, I don't have a good source but for a good tactical level description of the war find the book about Paoli – don't have the title in front of me just now.

Also like Urban's "Fusiliers", about one regiment that saw much of the war.

Another vote for "With Zeal and With Bayonets Only." It certainly dispels the myth of red-coated automatons blindly advancing towards the enemy!

If you read Spring's and Urban's books together, you will get an extremely good view of the British Army's performance in the war.

My favorite AWI book so far has been Red Coats and Rebels

Is that the Christopher Hibbert version, or the Hugh Bicheno version?
