Hi, all. I have an upcoming commission to paint a bunch of Highlanders in 28mm size. I'm OK with the tartans but those argyle socks are tough. Any techniques you have for painting these would be greatly appreciated!

Regards,
John

Don't know about argyle socks.. but fish-nets are a Bleeped text to paint!!! :-)

In a pinch those Highlanders will wear anything!

Hi, stoneman1810,
If you are OK with the tartans you shouldn't have any problems with the Highland stockings. I painted those for my regiment white and added pink diagonal stripes, beginning at the front and ending at the back where originally the seams were. As I say, no problem – but it takes some time (but less than the tartan).
Cheers, Fridericus

My usually do diagonal stripes in red around the sock, then repeat in the other direction which gives a nice checkerboard pattern.
Some figs also need the red cord which ties around the top going over separately.

Remember, when the tartan is getting you down, I have done the Black Watch, the Gordons and (here)

the Camerons in 1:1

Enjoy!

The pink diagonal stripes should have a red square where the stripes intersect. Certainly not a real problem. Am a away from home at the moment, or I'd send a photo.

McLaddie has it right. Diagonals of a pink/rose color and then do the intersections in red.

Now to figure out what I need to do to get my hands steady enough to paint the socks on 15mm minis!

Lion in the Stars… don't think about the fishnets that's for sure!!!!

Somebody just posted a source for waterslide decals of all this stuff on a different thread. You might want to check that out before subjecting yourself to this project.

My technique (admiittedly slightly larger 1:72 figures) is to hold the figure in my left hand, and paint with my right hand locked against my left, which solves hand steadiness problems.

Hey Lion, Rod!

Real men paint them on Baccus 6mm figures. Okay so their just red and white dots, but honestly they look like socks to me. Well at least when I can see them.

Best regards,

Glenn

1:1 on any highland regiment is not that impressive, if you choose your time right. Brussels June 15th might be hard work, by 1900 on 18th June you need far fewer boxes of Victrix or Perrys'…..seriously though…the stockings you can bluff your way through. The kilts as Lord Hill shows….? Respect, but that way lies madness.

Thanks, Guys! Hats off to Lord Hill – a braver man than me!
