I have several stories about Churchill that I like. The first was when Lady Astor said to Churchill, "If you were my husband, I'd poison your tea." In reply Churchill said, "Madam, if you were my wife, I'd drink it!" The second was in reply to Bessie Braddock (a rather manly-looking Labour MP) when she saw Churchill sitting in the House bar. (For a picture of Bessie Braddock, look here = link) She said, "Winston, you are drunk, and what's more you are disgustingly drunk." Churchill's reply was, "Bessie, my dear, you are ugly, and what's more, you are disgustingly ugly. But tomorrow I shall be sober
and you will still be disgustingly ugly." |

@GarryOwen "Show me a young Conservative and I'll show you someone with no heart. Show me an old Liberal and I'll show you someone with no brains." Which is quoted in various forms – unfortunately, it may not be by Churchill: link My personal favourites are: "The Americans will always do the right thing
after they've exhausted all the alternatives." "The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter." "The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessings; the inherent virtue of socialism is the equal sharing of miseries." |
