I love the doom dice and its combat system..

are there historical wargames that or miniature games that would use something similar?

thanks

I'm not familiar with 'doom dice'. Could you explain the system?

it where range and damage are all built into several colored d6's… so different weapons use different colored d6 depending on how far they can fire and the amount of damage they do..

google doom dice simulator..

The dice that come with the Doom boardgame?

Sounds like Seapower

Could be "Sea Power" but not sure.

Very old game. D6 with a red, a green and a blue face. The rest are blank (As I recall). The color indicates the type of damage done. A very old "Bucket of Dice" game. Used a computer to calculate the number of dice to through, like 62 for one attack

I actually like the idea of using dice like that from the game Doom and also Descent. I think the hard part would be getting the dice.

But it sounds good. Long range weapons use a green dice while hand to hand use the green. For weapons that have an extra punch add the blue damage. Something along those lines. I can't see it being used for more than skirmish, but who knows, it might work for what ever game you are playing.

FFG sells Descent dice in packs:

Cheaper to just get some blank ones from the FLGS and make your own.

space crusade is similar but more basic.
Super dungeon explore and descent mentioned earlier have the different coloured dice with some more powerful than others.

How is that different from "miss on a 1-3, minor wound 4-5, dead on a 6"? Sorry seems like you've just replaced a chart with lots of custom dice?

And oh yes, doesn't the Commands and Colors series do this? Each die has 2 infantry, one saber, one flag, one artillery, one cavalry. You hit by matching die roll to tagret type?

Lion in the Stars11 Apr 2014 5:26 p.m. PST

No, Seapower had 3 hit ranges, Red, Yellow (IIRC), and Blue, and I think that covered all 6 faces of the custom dice. What my group did was translate that into 6s (Reds), 4s and 5s (Yellow), or 1-3 (blue). Not sure why, although I suspect the old gunner's mate didn't quite understand probability and statistics and wanted to make sure he didn't screw anything up.

Personally, I don't like games requiring custom dice. Call me funny, but I like matching dice colors to army heraldry, and/or getting dice with the army's symbol on the 'best' number.

IIRC, in Doom's case each die face generates damage (the little bullet hole icons), range (the number), ammo expenditure (the cartridge symbol), and sometimes an auto-miss (the big X). Each dice color has a different mix of symbols on the various faces, and each attack involves a pool of dice based on the weapon used and some other factors. Descent uses a fairly similar system, with the addition of surges (lightning bolt symbols) that are spent to activate certain abilities (usually boosting damage or imposing conditional effects).

FFG is very fond of custom dice in their games, as any X-Wing or Star Wars RPG player will tell you.

Can anyone give the symbols on each side of the full set of Doom dice?

All the best,

John.
