I'm just in the middle of doing the 73rd Foot and had a "aarrgh" moment when I suddenly half-remembered reading somewhere that the 73rd, though not wearing highland dress, retained some highland features, namely the serjeants wore their sashes across the shoulder in Scottish fashion. I'm hoping I may have got muddled up or dreamt this (I've already painted all the serjeants you see) but wondered if anyone could confirm this one way or the other? |

I've had a look in CE Franklin's British Napoleonic Uniforms and he doesn't mention anything about the sergeants wearing their sashes across the shoulder. The Mont St Jean site also shows the 73rd's sergeants wearing waist sashes: link |

It may be that since they are not a kilted regiment they are not allowed to wear the sash over the shoulder. How do Serg'ts in the 71st HLI wear their sashes? |

The words "not allowed" is not how the British Army operates, then or now. If the Commanding Officer says "wear your sashes over your shoulder" then that is what they would do, regardless of any regulation to the contrary. However,I have absolutely no idea how they actually wore their sashes. Rod |
