Worse, I'm in the wilds of Northern California, so I am even further away and must content myself with tormenting John Treadaway about his incredible Hammer's Slammers events from afar on the TMP forum instead of in person like a truly civilized person can do

too expensive to get there and to be honest once was enough. |

Make the code "fish-n-chips" or "spotted-dick." Better yet, "biscuits-ARE-cookies-you-damned-seppos." That might not fit in the code box. ;) Best, JBR |

How does a one day show work over there? Do players game the night before and into the night like in the US? RebelMike RebelMinis.com |
The Bebop | 11 Apr 2014 9:35 a.m. PST |
Yeah that surprises me that it's only one day. For as big a deal as everyone makes it out to be, I thought it was at least a 3 day event. |
Bob Runnicles | 11 Apr 2014 10:00 a.m. PST |
In my experience (as a Brit who lived in the UK until 2001 before moving to Florida and who attended many Salutes) it's more a trade show to buy cool new stuff; clubs do set up demonstration and participation games but it's a lot closer to, say, 'the trade hall at Cold Wars or Historicon plus some extra rooms with games going on' than a typical US show where participation games tend to be king. Also, because it's a one day show the hall tends to be absolutely HEAVING. Personally I enjoyed Colors/Warfare more at Reading, they are both two day shows iirc. I'm down for a one day sale though and I love the ideas for the coupon codes, JBR :) |
Steve W | 11 Apr 2014 10:03 a.m. PST |
I dont think there are any 3 day events in the UK. I presume this is due to the amount of shows in the UK and there will always be one close to you so real need to stay overnight |

I've been every year for the past few years and will be going this weekend. For the benefit of any confused Americans
.. The appeal is not really about playing games at the show. This is the big difference with American conventions! There are some participation games, often put on by companies to showcase their latest rules or figures. There are also non-participation 'demo' games. These are not intended to be 'spectators watching other people playing' affairs. It is all about the eye-candy as groups and clubs show off what they can do with amazing terrain, beautiful figures and/or innovative ideas! And then you get the traders. Loads of traders. Selling everything wargames related you can think of! Many showing off their latest, eagerly awaited products. I would imagine it only lasts one day because it takes place in a huge hall in a major exhibition centre in the middle of London. And they don't come cheap

. Yup. Direct is always best in my book, as I'm getting too old and lazy to bother with catching connecting flights anymore
just going to have to confine my mischief until further notice to the Bay Area scene, to which end I just visited Game Kastle in Fremont for the first time today
I have been to the mountain, and it is good!

I enjoyed both Colours at Reading and Salute during my time in London plus Claymore in Edinburgh. Colours was like going Christmas shopping but leisurely and friendly. Salute was like going to the Easter Showgrounds Sideshow alley. Big, loud exciting, mysterious, exciting, sugar rush. Always a great buzz. All very different. |
AVAMANGO | 12 Apr 2014 3:48 a.m. PST |
Three key points to remember when attending Salute that past experience has taught me. #1 Try not to loose your free goodies bag as its includes a key map of the venue and were all the trading stands are located which you should try to mark off and visit your favorites first before they run out of stock, then you have the rest of the day to wander about at your leisure and of course you don't want to lose your exclusive free miniature. #2 Try not to blow your budget in the first five minutes of arriving and seeing all the traders luring you with all their wares like calling sirens of the sea, trust me there are always a few things that you wish you had seen and bought earlier but now find that you don't have the money to purchase them. #3 Avoid the bring and buy sale section for the first part of the morning unless your feeling particularly brave, its usually ten rows deep of overweight middle aged wargamers in a bargain buying frenzy, its not a pretty site and can be quite hazardous to your health unless you had the fore site to bring full body armour and a set of brass knuckles
. ;) zac |
Von Trinkenessen | 12 Apr 2014 7:23 a.m. PST |
#3 Zac you forgot to include a pomander, or full hasmat Kit if you prefer as its all about chemical warfare/ olefactory attack. Or to use the venacular: Betty Swollacks and personal freshness issues!!!! #4 sensible comfy shoes (its concrete) and your own supply of water/liquid refreshments, headache tablets. #5 if you have tinitus like I have it can be a nightmare so earplugs etc. |
AVAMANGO | 12 Apr 2014 5:41 p.m. PST |
@VT yup i didn't want to mention or for that matter remind myself about some of the gamers hygiene issues and some of the toxic odour's they secrete, i am sure this is a tactic to get to the front of the bring and buy frenzy guaranteeing them some room to maneuver
|
Bran Flayk | 13 Apr 2014 3:16 a.m. PST |
I had my "early bird" tickets so wouldn't have to queue for ages, and a long list of traders/games I wanted to see, and a few pre-orders to pick up on the day. Then spent Friday night being horribly ill and ended up missing Salute for the first time in about 15 years :-( Still, prevented me going mad with impulse buys whenever I came across something shiny and new. |
deflatermouse | 13 Apr 2014 4:26 a.m. PST |
Ah ha, but the toxic odour's they secrete is a tactic. Rather like a cephalopods ink reflex. It enables them to have the buyers advantage over something you never really wanted, anyway. |
Rebel Minis | 13 Apr 2014 6:15 a.m. PST |
