near the North Pole. "A group of Russian paratroopers of the Airborne Forces landed on Tuesday, April 8, 2014, for the first time on a drifting floe near the North Pole, a military spokesman said. "More than 50 servicemen were airdropped from an Ilyushin Il-76 military transport aircraft not far from Russia's drifting ice base Barneo (at 89 degrees North) with the use of the Arbalet-2 special-purpose parachute system," the airborne troops spokesman Yevgeny Meshkov told reporters. That parachute system is designed for jumps with a cargo container of up to 50 kg from transport jets moving at a speed of up to 400 km per hour. Meshkov said the landing went as planned with no injuries or loss of equipment, adding that the participants did not carry any armaments "due to the nature of the mission." Does anyone else remember the mini series which had David Soul as an American officer commanding a force to oppose a Soviet incursion into Alaska? Their buttons are a little too close for my liking. This is war, not romance!
Then we have the excellent Ice Station Zebra

Hmmm, Santa, his elves, and reindeer cavalry battle Russian paras at the North Pole, to keep them from trying to stop Christmas from coming. Sounds like an excellent "what-if" game. "adding that the participants did not carry any armaments "due to the nature of the mission.". Also makes me wonder how many paratroopers a hungry polar bear and her cubs can eat in one sitting? |

I think the mini series you refer to was called "World War III". As far as I know it was only ever on British TV once, and it's been a long time ago, but wasn't Rock Hudson playing the US president(?) and while I can remember the guy who played his Soviet counterpart, his name has me stumped. The only thing I remember was the small number of American defenders in Alaska using oil pipes for protection. |

Yes it was WW III the only battle scene I remember was them laying in oil pipes waiting for the Russians to come. Had to wade through an awful lot of crappy romance for that one bit of combat. |

Does anyone else remember the mini series which had David Soul as an American officer commanding a force to oppose a Soviet incursion into Alaska? I LOVED THAT MINI-SERIES! When it came out, I had one of the GI JOE Arctic Troopers, and wanted to get a bunch of them to play that out:
