Well I have a friend that was interested in playing and I said I would consider it. I went to the GW website and found out it has gone extinct. Then I took a look on Ebay and was horrified by the prices. Some things can be picked up at a reasonable price for being OOP and others made me wince when I saw the minimum bid. So does anyone know what GW has planned? |
chuck05 | 09 Apr 2014 8:02 p.m. PST |
Id wager since GW have moved on from metal and the cost vs reward to re do the molds for another material wouldnt be worth the effort, that the Specialist Game lines are effectively dead. I cant see GW selling the rights to another company either. Too bad. The Specialist Games were some of the best. |

Whoever said it was dead? As long as people still play it, and Legion 4 will attest that they do, it's still alive :) |
Johny Boy | 10 Apr 2014 4:09 a.m. PST |
I'd would say Epic is long dead and buried as far as the fanboys at GW are concerned, it's like so yesterday ;-)
.shame as nobody has a bad word to say about the system. And yes ebay prices are verging on alchemy as lead is literally being turned into Gold. Instead have a look at Proxies with Dark Realm miniatures for the Imperial Guard, Exodus Wars for Space Marine and the new Onslought miniatures for Tau, Sisters of Battle, Eldar. All outstanding miniatures |
wminsing | 10 Apr 2014 6:08 a.m. PST |
Exodus Wars (Steel Crown Enterprises) is another good source for not-GW Epic models. I've been considering such a project myself. -Will |
Dragon Gunner | 10 Apr 2014 6:44 a.m. PST |
The proxie infantry are cheap enough the issue is titans. GW baffles me with their business model
This project is probably stillborn unless I win the lottery. Titans start around $65 USD and go as high as $200. USD. I am not thrilled about cruising Ebay daily looking for some obscure mini to round out a collection. |
Dragon Gunner | 10 Apr 2014 7:43 a.m. PST |
"Whoever said it was dead? As long as people still play it, and Legion 4 will attest that they do, it's still alive :)"-Covert Walrus Legion 4 probably has miniatures to play the game. |
Ethanjt21 | 10 Apr 2014 8:44 a.m. PST |
I've seen EPIC using all proxy models. microworldgames.com best place to find proxies for IG, Eldar, maybe even SM. As far as titans, try some 10mm BattleTech clix mechs. Just rebase them and dress them up with some plasticard and voila, titan. link |

"Dead" = GW is no longer messing up a fine game |

We came up with Plan B on Tac Cmd (a long time ago, BTW): link As I said there – FRAKK GW-FW-SG ! Who needs'n !?!! All I can say is – Onslaught, Exodus Wars, DRM, CinC/PFC, TMG, MicroWorld, GZG, OLD CROW, etc., etc., etc.
Think out of the GW box
|
Legion 4 | 10 Apr 2014 10:00 a.m. PST |
And yes, I have most of all the GW Epic models released since '90, however
FRAKK GW-FW-SG ! Who needs'n !?!! All I can say is – Onslaught, Exodus Wars, DRM, CinC/PFC, TMG, MicroWorld, GZG, OLD CROW, etc., etc., etc.
Think out of the GW box
Those companies and others have all the minis you may need to play any iteration of Epic or any other 6mm Sci-fi game
And we on Tac Cmd have already released 2 fan-based rules sets for other Epic armies that E:A missed. And have rules for all Epic armies and more on Tac Cmd – link And I will say again – JOIN Tactical Command
If you have problems, let me know

We are talking about GW here: So the chance of this happening well
Do you expect Squats to come back? Do you expect Ork Mad Boyz to come back? Do you expect Eldar Harlequins will get their own Codex again? Do you expect Man-O-War to come back? (Dreadfleet does not count) Here are the answers to all of these. Hell No they are not going to bring anything back. If they can't make you buy any of their overprice large models what makes you thing they will create something that is only 6mm tall. GW wants you to buy their $120 USD – $180 USD large ass models that suck in the game and are not worth their cost in dollars or points. You are far better off finding a different game or writing up your own set of rules. Because GW will never do it. Because that would be the smart thing to do. Though if they did they would gouge their customers selling the miniatures for higher prices then Ebay. |
Space Monkey | 10 Apr 2014 5:27 p.m. PST |
I hope not! If they ever returned to it they'd just do the usual pave over of what's gone before, release new armies in patented AMAZO! pudding-resin at 9.25mm (so proxies won't fit), and make it a 'limited edition' run based around some scenario that only features Space Marines vs. Ambulls. I've got most all the Epic minis I'd ever want but wouldn't hesitate to proxy or create new forces (GW FORBID!!!) using the great stuff from better companies. |
CyberShadow | 10 Apr 2014 6:04 p.m. PST |
As you can imagine, there has been a lot of chatter about whether the SGs are truly 'dead', following the revamp of the GW web site. My personal opinion is that they are no more dead today than they were last week
but you can take that any way you like. ;-) Many of us have been through several editions of Epic, and remember similar 'Winters' between editions when it seemed that the game had shuffled off its mortal coil. The gap between 3rd and 4th edition was a particularly difficult one. My guess is, as far as GW are concerned, Epic (and the SGs) are 'dead' until its worth a new edition, just like every time before it. But, a new edition will mean by necessity new rules, new minis to sell, etc. Also, GW are a different company today than they were when Epic Armageddon (4th ed) was released, and its clear that anything outside their 'big 3' games are not a priority or even on the radar right now. That said, things have been worse in the past. (Some would argue that they were worse when the game WAS GW supported!) To play Epic today, for rules, you have 3 choices. 1. You can try to find the rule book on eBay. 2. You can play NetEpic: netepic.org 3. You can play NetEA: net-armageddon.org These last two options are community extensions of Epic 2nd edition and 4th edition respectively. Both are very active, are under constant development. There is a UK based tournament focused version of fourth edition as well, epic-uk.co.uk In particular, NetEA is continually putting out updated army lists, discussing the relative balance of the forces, etc. We also have an annual painting competition – for example link – and the development of the game is driven by a core five people, co-ordinating members tasked with a specific race, and we encourage the community to get involved. In terms of minis, one of the best things that GW could have done for 6mm science fiction gaming is to create a game, hype it up, build a player community and then drop it! You are almost spoiled for choice. Some popular manufacturers are Dark Realm Miniatures, Exodus Wars, Onslaught Miniatures, Troublemaker Games, Plasmablast Miniatures, Microworld Games, Command Horizon, Angel Barracks, as well as the 'old timers' Ground Zero, Irregular, etc. As mentioned above, and acknowledging that I am biased, but I would recommend that interested parties drop into the Tactical Command forums (when you register, please drop me an email – webdude@tacticalwargames – and I will get your account approved faster), as there is a lot that I have not touched on here. So, is Epic dead? Not in my house. |
Caesar | 11 Apr 2014 8:11 a.m. PST |
It's a shame that they pulled the games completely from their site. Now you can't even download the rules any more. |
Legion 4 | 11 Apr 2014 8:38 a.m. PST |
Cybershadow is the webmaster of Tactical Command and I've e-known him for decades (Hi C/S !)
Epic is only dead if you want it to be
or you join Tactical Command, if you like
So you can "weep and wring your hands" like a rabid fan-boy about GW's decisions
Or get some of the great other 6mm sci-fi minis available(we've listed some !), and I and many others on Tac Cmd have them as well GW minis. And their company owners are denizens of Tac Cmd. So
it's your move
Or play 40K, BattleTech, Shoots & Ladders, Candyland, etc.
Here's my "Dirty Dozen/Last Chancers", with figs from GW, DRM, GZG –

Calico Bill | 11 Apr 2014 2:43 p.m. PST |
As we play 1 or 2 games of EA a week, 4000-5000 points, it's certainly not dead here. It remains my favourite game. Check out option 3 CyberShadow mentioned and TacCom in particular, and you can't go wrong! |

Well I lucked out after a second conversation about the subject my friend informs me he has boatloads of the stuff in storage and its all mine as long as I paint it and we play. There are items I will need to pick up to round out collections but the project is no longer insurmountable. I am not sure I will get him to play 15mm scifi skirmish again minis were to small to see what weapons they carried. Looks like we will be playing TSATF, Epic Armageddon and Space Hulk. Has anyone knocked together some rules for a Genestealer Cult Army in Epic scale? |
Legion 4 | 13 Apr 2014 11:01 a.m. PST |
Check on Tac Cmd
link And check out Onslaught for some nice figures for such an army – link |
SouthernPhantom | 14 Apr 2014 7:04 p.m. PST |
Well, Epic's rules are all online. Literally all of them. You can buy oodles of cheapo tanks and infantry from GHQ or other sites, and I'm sure that Shapeways has some nice 6mm aliens somewhere. It would not be hard to resurrect Epic with different minis. |
Legion 4 | 15 Apr 2014 8:56 a.m. PST |
Yes, rules are available
But like I said, there are some great 6mm Sci-fi models from Exodus Wars, TMG, Onslaught, DRM, CinC/PFC, Microworld, GZG, Darkest Star, MAATAC, Irregular, etc.
[Of course we all knew this on Tac Cmd ]
And, GHQ is nice but a bit small IMO, and not Sci-fi
as is Brigade, but they make nice Sci-fi as well

Can anyone offer a guide to collecting as in how many of each unit I should have in my inventory. I want to be able to field all kinds of different tactical options but don't want to collect to the point some miniatures never make it into play. I recently made some purchases and then my friend gave me a large box of stuff. I now have 9 Gargants and I can't imagine they will all ever make it onto the table unless I run a 10,000 point game. 1. How many of each titan variant? 2. How many of each infantry company variant? 3. How many of each vehicle platoon? I am looking for a rough guide you don't have to get real specific (i.e. You need 8 Stompas etc
) I know it all has to do with the point / size of the game and to be honest I don't see us going above 2,000 points for most games. We might run 5,000 point participation games when we have guests. And yes Legion that helps! |
Legion 4 | 19 Apr 2014 11:50 a.m. PST |
What Epic Armies are you talking about and what version of Epic ? Each army is generally organzied a bit differently based on the version
Really should post this on Tac Cmd, once you decide what armies/forces you want/have
there are threads of this stuff by army
link |
Legion 4 | 19 Apr 2014 12:00 p.m. PST |
Here's a link with a few of my Epic TO&Es[Army Lists]
my TO&Es are based on SM1 with a little cherry picking from all the other versions
link Note: For example
One of the Charts shows my DRM's Kray Lizardmen units. They are not GW. As I have said before, I have a number of other 6mm model companies' figs in my 6mm Sci-fi forces inventory
They are organized like Orks but with higher tech [like Eldar] AFVs and such
I have Forces/units of IG, SMs, Traitor SMs, Orks, Eldar, Chaos, Squats, Tau, Necrons, Ad Mech/Titan Legions, and 'nids. With some other 6mm companies forces/races worked in to the mix. Including Old Crow/GZG Hammer's Slammers

Dragon Gunner | 01 May 2014 7:08 p.m. PST |
Thanks for the tip Legion I still haven't been able to take stock of my friends collection. Trades might be the way to go because it sounds like we have multiples of some items and nothing in some categories. I have been watching EBAY and I am appalled at the prices. Some items can be picked up for reasonable prices for being OOP and others seem to invite insane bidding wars. I hope over time some of the buyers drop out of the market once they have what they are looking for. I have been taking a hard look at proxies! I have been creating a shopping list based on what I will need for each army list setting a cap at 3,000 points per game. Larger games can be had by allowing allies. |
Legion 4 | 02 May 2014 6:51 a.m. PST |
Glad to help ! And the boys on Tac Cmd will take PayPal too
But if you have many of some items you may not need, trades will work too ! And Yes, look at all the "Proxies" available. Here again is the link from Tac Cmd on Proxies
Plus check out all the other companies that I and others have mentioned
Also you can e-mail me direct if you like – Rok31A@msn.com

At this point, I'd absolutely recommend proxy models instead. THe costs of actual Epic mini's is a bit nuts. |
Mithmee | 06 Jun 2014 6:57 p.m. PST |

As an aside, it is INFURIATING how badly Epic was handled. It went from being one of the "big three" along with Warhammer and 40K to basically vanishing. |
Mithmee | 27 Jun 2014 12:25 p.m. PST |
Well that last set of rules for it sucked big time. Then GW changed directions and decided to go with the full on screw over the customer business plan. |
Weasel | 28 Jun 2014 11:33 a.m. PST |
It's too bad about Epic 40.000 too. The box set itself (minus rules) was probably one of the best they had ever done. A huge pile of plastic ruins, enough orks and space marines that you could actually play a pretty big battle with them. Me and a friend bought two boxes and traded the figures, and we didn't buy much else for a long time. |
