"Troops might be able to replace those heavy night vision goggles strapped to their helmets and replace them with contact lenses.

The University of Michigan has developed a prototype contact lens that enhances night vision by placing a thin strip of graphene between layers of glass. The graphene — a form of carbon — reacts to photons, which makes dark images look brighter.

The development of the lens still has quite a ways to go before soldiers can scrap those heavy goggles. Right now the graphene only absorbs 2.3 percent of the light. Those percentages have to rise before true night vision can be achieved…"

And in a slight tangent…

Google is working on contact lenses that monitor blood sugar levels using tears:

I wonder if Google will try to militarize Google Glass? Or would a heads up display just be too distracting for a grunt?

I have a set of 3-D glasses and also a set of X-Ray glasses.
Neither work very well independantly so I'm accepting funding for research in combining them into 3-D/X-Ray glasses. I'm sure they would be great for surgeons……..and also fun at cocktail parties.

Glass contact lenses would never be authorised for combat use. That is a good way to have your corneas shredded.

Also if this application actually worked it could be applied to the "heavy goggles" to make them light. Ballistic glasses/googles with NV capability sounds like a good idea.

@strderg

For military use a full overlay would be far more useful than Google Glass. They are already equipping troops in Afghanistan with combat tablets, when the technology is ready a pair of goggles giving "enhanced reality" (eg overlaying friendly and enemy positions, mission markers, lines of fire etc) would work well.

Remember the rumors that SEAL Team 6 had these when they went after Bin Laden.
