Hi, Does anyone know where I could get 40 mm square bases. They are the games workshop ones. I know I could probably get them from them but I'm loathed to pay over the odds for them. Any advice from you all would be great. Thanks Chris |

I cut my own from a $0.35 USD vinyl floor tile purchased at the hardware store.
Two metal bases shown for comparison.

Plastic – Renedra, but not certain they do them by size, rather than as a mixed sprue. MDF, Minibits / Pendraken or East Riding Minitures |

I buy mine from Wargames Accessories. They are pretty inexpensive, sheet metal, always the right size and for the price I can't even begin to imagine cutting them out myself. |

I don't think anyone else makes 40 x 40mm bases the same style as GW, except Gale Force 9 magnetic bases and they're even more expensive!I asked Doug at EM4 if they would make them but they said that there wasn't enough demand, odd as they sell 40mm round bases. Renedra make thin plastic bases the same size but even they cost 25p each link I would just use mdf cut bases lot of people sell them on ebay. |

Another vote for Wargames Accessories metal bases (I order mine from Brookhurst). Doug |

Litko makes laser-cut 3mm thick MDF bases, but I haven't seen any plastic, beveled edge bases. Well, not any plain plastic bases, anyway. |

I've bought a LOT of warhammer, etc bases from this guy. Only advertises what he has in stock and I've always had good service from him. hoardobits.com |

Yes – I heard there wasn't much demand for these, too (I was looking to order dozens of them, if the price was right, so

I have a friend with a table saw. I just buy 2' square sheets of MDF and he cuts lovely square bases for me . . . I'm sure that you could find someone to do the same for you . . . and the MDF sheets are very inexpensive. -- Jeff

Do the vinyl floor tiles warp over time? That seems lIke a very sturdy way to base miniatures. |
Wargames Designs | 24 May 2015 2:55 a.m. PST |
Cheap vinyl tiles DO warp. I use Marley floor tiles which are much thicker and better all round without the annoying sticky base to them. They are more expensive, but you can pick them up fairly cheaply from time to time from ebay or flooring shops that are selling off old stock etc. |

Get all my bases from Minibits. Wide range of MDF pre cut or cut to what you want. Cheap and good service. Can't imagine why anyone would want to mess around doing them at home these days. |

Warbases. MDF, two standards, cheap and slightly less cheap, available 2mm or 3mm thick. The website is good. |

I responded with a link to Hoard O'Bits since the OP enquired about GW-style plastic bases. That's where I buy mine from. Having said that, I very much like Litko's 3mm wooden bases. I use them for my Ancients armies. I buy the 120mm frontage, since I'm basing for Impetus, but I have some of their other products and I think they are an excellent value with great quality and service. Nowadays, outside of WH40K and the odd skirmish game, I use the plastic GW square bases (20mm size) for mounting single 28mm minis to for painting. I use Aileene's Tacky Glue to attach them and let them dry overnight before priming. The square base is the right size for this, and the Tacky Glue holds well, but also allows you to pop them off easily when they are finished. Just my 2-cent's worth on the subject. |

I use Shogun Miniatures MagBases for everything. Only 1.5mm thick and has an integral magnetic base. Not expensive for what it is and the guys Robert and Andrew are easy to deal with. |

You have several good alternatives. I really like the Litko "thick" bases, 3mm thick and 40x40 mm. They work well for Longstreet rules. I also use them for other periods. The reasons I like them are: 1. They are very precisely cut of good quality laminated wood. 2. The edges, if gently sanded after basing the figure, flocking etc, and then stained and varnished, produce a very nice look. 3. They are very durable, do not flex at all and take sanding and paint very well. They are not the cheapest solution, but for a quality finish, I highly recommend them. You will see many examples of these bases on my Blog: horseandmusket2.blogspot.com |

I picked up several of the Victrix sets of 48 40mm square bases for AUS$15 each from the proprietor of a local shop that went out of business, which works out about the same price per base as Brigadier General's DIY floor tile bases. They have rounded corners, so are perhaps best suited to irregulars or skirmishers, or rules that allow for spaces between elements (such as Death in the Dark Continent). |

For my 3mm stuff I use 20mm x 10mm Litkos, the thinnest ones. At the scale having nice clean, matched-up bases is really important, so home-grown bases are out of the question. Also, careful sawing MDF! The dust from that stuff can be vicious if you're allergic! |
