Brilliant, interesting that the pictures are not in any way just modernisations of the 960 edition. Interesting too that the earlier version has what I assume to be scarves as flags. |

Yes, just noticed the windsock standard. That's really interesting and suggests a copy from a Late Roman original. Really interesting!! |

Or, of course, a maintenance of a Visigothic tradition or an Arab transmission(though they are not noted for windsock standards) or maybe a Carolingian source? |

The style in the 960 bible is similar to Mozarabic Beatus manuscripts: The siege of Jerusalem, the San Miguel Beatus Codex by Beatus of Liébana, Spain, 960 The siege of Jerusalem, the Valcavado Beatus Codex by Beatus of Liébana, Spain, 970 The siege of Jerusalem, the Urgell Beatus Codex by Beatus of Liébana, Spain, 975 but I have not seen similar standards in these. I have found another pair of matching scenes from both bibles, Solomon (perhaps the 'Judgment of Solomon'): Solomon with 2 knives in Biblia de San Isidoro de Leon, 960 Solomon with 2 swords in Biblia Segunde de San Isidoro de Leon, 1162 Druzhina 12th Century Illustrations of Costume & Soldiers |
