Season 4 an of course I have the Game of Thrones Bug! So how to best game it? I was thinking Song of B&H or Saga? Maybe Basic Impetus? I've got the bug and need help. |

The board-game is pretty good for a strategic level game. Tactical: Really anything you want. However if you really want to have characters have weight then Song of B&H and Saga would be great. Basic Impetus, DBA are more from large battles. Warhammer historical and its derivatives (Clash of Empires, Conquest and something, something dark side of the force) is in between. |

For skirmish, I'd go SoB&H. For mass battles, I'm not sure – perhaps something that does War of the Roses well? I suppose the first thing I'd try, would be Might of Arms, followed by Hail Caesar. Doug |

It's been a while since he posted, but one gamer was planning to use Dux Britanniarum to game battles in Westeros. His blog: link |

There is a tactical game called Battle of Westeros based on BattleLore/Command and Colors. I can't vouch for it though. |

A Game of Thrones (2nd ed) boardgame by FFG Is great. I have the A Song of Ice and Fire RPG by Green Ronin but haven't played it yet. I like the look of the House rules, as well as the deadliness of the combat system. Also has a good intrigue system. For mass battles I've been considering Hail Caesar. I've been spending way too much time looking at 10mm proxies for the various houses. :) |

For "ordinary" battles, any rules that work for HYW or WOR would work just fine. York/Stark vs Lannister/Lancaster? I am sure you can come up with a rule for Grey Wind. |

PRIDE OF LIONS is fantasy mass battles. There's a good variety of character traits and abilities including charisma (very important) and bodyguards and hard-to-kill and so forth. Good rules for undead and such, also. |
corporalpat | 07 Apr 2014 7:05 p.m. PST |
Agreed! There are countless sets of rules that would work. WoR with dragons and magic. What else do you need? |

Warmaster fantasy would work pretty well. Characters aren't overpowered but do have a presence on the table top. You'd pretty much be in good shape with Brettonian or Empire armies if you leave out the firearms. Plus it has rules for dragons. |

Battle of Westeros is great! Models are just a little bigger than 15mm models. |

I think the base game for westeroes is out of print. This is normal for FFG,they just release expansions. You can download the rules for free from their site, but you need the order cards as its basically command and colours. The figs are small 20mm, think old airfix. GoT is fantasy WoR. I would have thought Warhammer, WAB or war master would fit the bill. I'm planning on using Impetus with the fantasy add ons, using a mix of perry WoR and gripping beast dark ages. |

I think playing a wargame of Game of Thrones kind of missed the point

I've used the new DBA3.0 to run several mass battles set in Westros. It works great and captures the much more realistic aspect of fighting from the books. The descriptions from the books of pike blocks, shield walls and the effect of a knight charge on a spear wall are all well represented by DBA. I've already done the Battle of the Greenfork several times as well as the Battle Beyond the Wall. I'm working on the Blackwater (big project) and the big battle now being played out in the pre-release chapters from Winds of Winter. You can borrow heros/mages from Hordes of the Things which like the books keeps them at a lower level than say Warhammer. I've posted Army Lists and special rules for characters. (I've put together my own rule set based on DBA3.0/HOTT but limited to just those troop types needed for Westeros – A Game of Ice and Fire). I've played the old FFG Westeroes game many times. Its an improved version of Battle Lore. Lots of special rules and some weird troop types make it feel more like a traditional fantasy game. Ice and Fire is a great source material for battles and campaigns but I strongly recommend starting with an historical rule set and expanding out. Same for figures. The new wave of historical plastic 28mm make great Westeros armies. TomT |

Should have also mentioned I working on a Saga warband using the Dark Sword 40mm figures. TomT |

GW's War of the Ring massed-battle rules: link Characters have an impact on the battle, but don't dominate the battle. There's also an expansion book, with more troop types and characters: link Like all GW products, the books are a bit pricey, though. |

The key is long breaks between turns (Somewhere in the 3-6 year range). |

I used Ganesha Games' Song of Blades and Heroes and related works for skirmish Game of Thrones. 300 points per side giving 5-12 figures per side. Qne set game in King's Landing being a street fight between Starks and Lannisters with Ned and Jamie present and the Gold cloaks set to intervene to allow for a 3rd palyer to join in. 2nd game was Night's Watch and Wildlings fighting over sheep with a White Walker and some Wights showing up in the middle. SBH lets you construct characters to fit the books or TV series. For big massed battles I would use Mantics' Kings of War. Their Kingdom of Men army list gives you everything you need for GoT Humans and use Wights/Mummies/Zombies from the undead list! Just limit the magic items to what appears in GoT. Flaming Sword is all I can think of at the moment! ;-) |

Can we post word documents on here? If so, I could put on the warbands and scenarios I put together for the demo games. I should say they are weighted to melee combat with no missiles or magic as they were done at the time of season 1. |
Barks1 | 08 Apr 2014 6:26 p.m. PST |
There were a stack of HoTT lists somewhere on the web, for big battles. Otherwise, I'd go SBH for skirmishes. |
Thomas Thomas | 09 Apr 2014 1:11 p.m. PST |
Straight out of the book HOTT is too limited for Ice and Fire. Use DBA 3.0 and add in a few HOTT elements. (Heros/Mages/Dragons/Aireal Hero for ridden Dragon/Flyers for Young Dragons/Paladins). TomT |

I've been playing around with Ronin for doing exactly this, which I suspect is fairly rare. I'm also doing a Riverlands force from House Mallister and a Northern force from House Tallhart though, so you can probably tell how deeply I've lost myself in ASOIAF ;) |

As mentioned above, I'm using Dux Britanniarum with some eventual rules conversions lifted from from others who have modified those rules to fit a late medieval setting. TBH, my gaming has gone dark since July of last year due a series of demands and travails in real life, but I have not given it up. While I LOVE Dux Brit for skirmish-level raids (which comprise the majority of actions) it doesn't satisfy for large battles. I'm currently studying Medieval Warfare by Terry Gore (Foundry) and, while a bit more fiddly than Hail Caesar, they have more of a medieval feel than HC. And, I highly endorse FFG Battles of Westeros to get your fix quickly. Some clever fellow on BGG created an adaption where his group plays the Game of Thrones strategy game and, when it comes to the battles, the fight them out using Battles of Westeros, making GoT a sort of campaign. |
