New blog post about how I am individually basing 15mm figures. Check it out here.

These look great.

I really like the idea of sub-basing weapons teams for casualties, well done.

This is exactly where I should be with my project.

Thanks for the pictures; they explain so much so quickly.

Cheers.

Great job. I now know how I am going to base. Thank you!

Very nice and very useful Thanks

Well done. +1 for sub-basing, I do it with my weapon teams and I game in 28mm. Works great.

Good skills sir. I'm a big fan of individually based 15mm.

Very nice! Kinda wish I'd seen that sooner, the idea of filling the center hole of the washer with a suitably-thin magnet never occurred to me!

That would also let me use a simple steel bottom for my sabot bases (one of my projects is Colonial gaming, where there's still some ranked-up movement going on).

Now, about this team base:

Is that a sandwich of 1mm plastic, steel paper (or flex steel), and another layer of 1mm plastic I see? Why'd you put plastic on the bottom of the base?

PrivateSnafu08 Apr 2014 10:43 a.m. PST

It's what I had on hand and built trial and error. It's 0.8mm plastic card. 2 pieces with holes, one with a smaller hole attached to the sheet magnet stuff which is a slight bit thinner. I decided the sheet magnet did not provide a strong enough connection so I changed things up and added the bottom. I'm going to cast them in resin and there is a space for a small washer or magnet in the bottom. Like this:

It's 4 layers of 0.8mm plus the sheet magnet. They were just prototypes. If I do them again they will probably be all plastic.

There have been some great ideas for doing this in 15mm of late. Thanks for sharing.

I already use that same size washer for my 15mm. Not sure if I can retrofit the magnet into the washer now that the figures have been glued. Then I need to make the bases. But some of my units have a base of 5 figures. Doubt it will get done soon.

How did you do the basing itself? Is it sand? Putty? I have been wondering how to do my bases. For 28mm I would glue sand and then paint/flock it. However for 15mm I am wondering if straight flocking would be better. Anyway, I like your basing technique so please elaborate.

Looks like resin sand to me.

Vallejo Pumice. It will get flock, static grass, clump foliage, and or tufts (Silfors) in some combination yet to be determined when the whole army is done with painting.

Great blog article on basing! This is very useful info for those that may use their minis with different rules. I really like the flexibility the magnetic bases offer.

Looking at it all again, I really like the looks of the figures mounted on the washers vs the pennies, they just seem to have a much nicer look is all.

this is pretty awesome, im glad you posted it!!!

I've definitely made it more complicated than using a penny. It's just personal taste.

I think keeping ground scale as 20mm = 5 feet is important. That way if people want to use pennies for their miniatures they can still do dungeon crawls/street fights and things like that.

I just got my stuff from Splintered Light (Thanks Dave!) and I am going to be making some additional modifications to my process. Demi-humans will go on 1/2" bases, Humans on the 5/8", Ogres on 3/4" (pennies).

That will result in a 10' wide corridor being 40mm wide. 2 to 3 humanoids will fit across a 10' passage/alley.

There WILL be a follow up blog post, be sure to follow me!
