Looking to field some targets….er, I mean UN troops, in 15mm, for use in Africa, circa 1975-85. Battle rifles and helmets are preferred. What suggestions do the esteemed membership have for me?

I was thinking a bit about using Peter Pig's French, but they are equipped with FAMAS which is a bit late for my tastes. The FAMAS F-1 wasn't accepted by the French military until 1978.

Figures with battle rifles and berets might work, such as these Peter Pig regulars, but I am curious if there may be other options.

Use the uniform of the country that sent them. Paint then as "normal" but with blue helmets.

I've used the Peter Pig French…in helmets with the FAMAS..no one really notices the weapons anyway at that scale…

Scroll down and you can see their vehicles and then the troops in their blue helmets….

As John said above. They are going to be armed by whatever country they hail from. Not sure they wear berets though.

Peter Pigs ARVN……….GI pots and M16's…..leave out LMG's and support weapons as they are on a 'peacekeeping' mission with restrictive rules of engagement……….they would pass as any Western orientated but 'non-aligned' force……..give 'm some trucks and pick ups for transport -maybe an armoured car as a 'bullet magnet'………

Plus Peter Pig head swaps are very easy

Some one makes Argentine troops in 15mm with US helmets, FNs etc. Seems they would be a good fi.

Blue berets seems to have been standard issue in most UN missions I've seen observed up close and personal though various forms of "baseball cap" style headwear was begining to appear as well. But that is the 90's and later. But once the shooting starts the helmets get put on asap unless the troops either don't have them as have been the case with some 3rd World troops or if the troops are sloppy and have left the helmets out of reach.

LMG's and MG's were fairly common in peace keeping missions. It's the real heavy supports like mortars, RCLs, at-weapons and all the other things that can really hurt the bad guys that are often missing.

Thanks for the suggestions. I like the thought of using the Peter Pig French (for my own devious reasons)…nice work you've done there, Murphy. ARVN could be interesting, but without M16s perhaps. Trying to stay away from AK-47 armed troops as most, not all, but most UN countries would not be wielding AKs.

Argies is an interesting suggestion. Battlerifles, steel pot helmets, simple battledress. There are two companies making "15mm" Argentinians, MJ Figures (closer to 18mm) and FireForce.

MJ Figures will not blend with the other 15mm forces I have. Height wise they are not bad, but they are certainly well fed troops, they are.

Does anyone know how FireForce compares to Peter Pig, QRF, and/or Rebel?

Check out Old Glory UK new Falklands War 15 mm for Argentines etc

Or try our postwar Brits in berets with SLR (Falklands): link

Or possibly post war Germans in helmets with G3: link

Jarrovian – Indeed, looking at those. Sharp looking sculpts those are!

Geoff – I own some of the West Germans with G3, nice figures. Do the Brits have a lot of kit (bergans particularly) on them?

Thanks!

GeoffQRF08 Apr 2014 4:28 a.m. PST

No bergans

Indian troops would be AK armed IIRC and they have done quite a lot of UN peace keeping missions. So would some African forces.

Geoff – do you have any pics handy of the Brits?

GeoffQRF08 Apr 2014 3:01 p.m. PST

Ummm… maybe…
