A few days ago, I put a Heavy Gear Hunter mini on a FoW small base and it just looks… Maybe not "wrong" but so different that I'm not sure it's kosher :p

I think anyone with an interest in miniature (giant) robots has seen mechs mounted on hexagonal or round bases.

Has anyone used square or rectangular basing?

Super quick photo to show you guys. Hunter on FoW base, fleet scale Hunter on washer, BT Uller on hex and some infantry on penny/washer.

My minis are really only for FUBAR (Heavy Gear stuff counts as power armour), so base shape doesn't really matter. Just wondering what the community thinks.

Back in the 90's, GW used to sell their 28 mm dreadnoughts with square bases, though Epic titans were provided with round bases.

For Mecha I think round looks better.

I use round.

Back in the 90's, GW used to sell their 28 mm dreadnoughts with square bases, though Epic titans were provided with round bases.

That's only because they didn't make round 40mm (or 60mm, or 120mm, or those weird oval things the new 28mm Knights come with) back then. The only larger bases they had for years were square, or the rectangular 25x50mm cavalry bases. Titans got the very first large rounds, and back then they came with a window for displaying the spinning-wheel shield dial thing.

Round for mecha for me too, unless the rules require something else (hexagons, for ex).

I use round for almost everything I can (even groups of 15mm WWII figures). To me flat edges stand out more than curves. I've never liked square or hex bases.

What ever looks best … Mostly round

I prefer hexes, but Battletech was my first experience with mecha.

The one with the hex base looks like a boardgame piece, it's not like something I would use voluntarily for miniatures gaming.

grommet3707 Apr 2014 3:00 p.m. PST

Good to know.

Glad I bought fender washers and Litko rounds.

Really thought about hex when I saw the mecha game tokens.

I've used FoW bases for Gear Krieg "mechs", just because all my other WWII minis were on the same style bases. But I like round better.

For my 15mm mecha or walkers i just use 40mm or 60mm metal washers they are cheap and strong.

SonofThor07 Apr 2014 6:13 p.m. PST

As a Battletech player we always used hexagonal bases. But mainly because that is what was available. I use round metal washers as bases for 15mm sci-fi now.
