Would anyone by any chance live in Japan, have a contact in Japan or travel to Japan any time soon?

I'm considering a Shadowrun themed game and I'd love to have some 50ish 1-yen coins (that's less than half a $ in total) to use as counters… The universal currency of the Shadowrun world is the (new) yen and such coins would be so much more characterful than the usual coloured beads!

So I'm basically wondering if anyone would be in state and willing to go into a local bank, buy a roll of those coins and send them to me. I'd, off course, pay for the coins and the shipping!

Thank you!

Can't you just get some from an exchange? Or don't they let you transfer to other currencies like that?

And lots more to be found, both old and new.

I'd just go to the bank and order them. It's just money. Don't buy it in an auction, get it at par.

Most (all ?) currency exchanges don't deal in coins. You might be able to find some at a coin shop – but possibly for a lot more than they are worth.

What size are they, in metric? I have some old copper 1 and 2 cent pieces from NZ that may do the trick if it's just size you need.

Banks don't deal much in foreign coin either.

I don't have any 1yen coins left, pretty sure I dumped them all into a Shrine's offering box on my way out of the country…

I forgot how much Shadowrun inflated the Japanese nuyen… the Yen has been at roughly 100 to the dollar for pushing 50 years, and the Nuyen is worth roughly what a dollar is today!

I literally have a bag of 1-yen coins sitting next to me at my desk as I type this. They take forever to deposit into the ATMs here; I'll gladly send you some. If you need yen coins of any other denomination, let me know.

@Corsec. My wife actually work in a bank and assured me that they don't do foreign coins… Too much cost for them to stock/handle/distribute then given they're worth.

@Cacique. I hadn't thougt of ebay! My request seemed so weird in my own eyes, that I didn't consider the usual suspects. Lots of auctions are for old coins (I'm doing sci fi, so the more modern the coins look, the better; even if coins won't be in use any more, I don't want to use credit cards as markers) and even more don't ship to Belgium, but it might work.

@Walrus. I don't care about the size so much than about some small token with kanji on them to use as they are for markers.

@Lion. Most sci-fi (and quite a few fantasy) rpg go with 1 nuyen/credit/gold coin/whatever currency is used being approximately worth 1 contemporary $ (at the publication date). Allow the player to easily figure common prices without going through conversion. Call it sacrificing some suspension of disbelief (not much if you ask me) in the name of fluidity.

@Dunadan! That would be wonderful… No thanks, no other denomination needed, just some 50 1-yen. Please, send me a mail at trojanpoints@gmail.com so we can figure how to handle it. Thank you very much!
