I've updated my series of articles on DBP. The most recent one is probably of more use to the traveller than the wargamer though:

That's great. Just what I'm into at the moment.

I am really glad to see that model of the Eliane bunker and trenches.

I sure would like to visit Vietnam. Am reading Martin Windrow's The Last Valley. This adds to the interest.

heyjoe … if you have not, read Bernard Fall's Street Without Joy and Hell In A Very Small Place …

darthfozzywig06 Apr 2014 4:38 p.m. PST

I've read both Bernard Fall's excellent books. I still need to read The Last Valley.

If you are looking for good reads here is an English translation of Langlais' book:

I've checked the translation and it is OK. Apart from the map on page 12 which is in the original the illustrations have been added and most are sound, except the Katyushas on page 74.

Cheers,
Bertie

Bertie, I thought I was going to have to wait until I had learned French to read Langlais book. Thank you! Thank you so very much!
I owe you a beer

317e.
With Spanish dub and English subs:

Or in French, with no subs:

The DVD is on Amazon but seems to be without subs. I bought my copy of Dien Bien Phu from Thailand, that was the only way of getting subtitles, wonder if I have to do the same for 317e.

Nice Thomas N. And Birte! Thanks for the links!

Thanks for the book recommendations – I have just got both "Street of Joy" and "The Savage War of Peace" (Algerian War) on audiobook, so looking forward to getting through those.

Excellent additional information on this post. Thanks.

Great report, thanks for sharing. The photos are great!

heyjoe, don't forget Hell In A Very Small Place where Fall looks closer at DBP. I am reading that right now. Excellent book.

Bertie08 Apr 2014 7:31 a.m. PST

Glad to be of help gents.

Howard Simpson's three books "DBP: The Epic Battle America Forgot," "Tiger in the Barbed Wire" and "Bush at and Black Tie" are often overlooked. They are not as good as Fall, Rocolle or Windrow as overall accounts of the battle, but he had actually been to DBP and so had a perspective the others don't, and have lots in general about his time in Indochina.

Cheers,
Bertie

Wicked! I only have the first one in my collection. Quick, Batman, to the Amazon Mobile!
Thanks, Bertie!

Etranger09 Apr 2014 4:03 a.m. PST

I thought that Fall visited DBP too, albeit before the siege? My copy is out in the shed and it's pouring out!Simpson does provide another prespective though.

Bertie09 Apr 2014 6:00 a.m. PST

Etranger,
Keep dry!
Fall left Indochina on October 16th 1953, well before "Castor", to return to the USA via France and get married. He returned in the summer of 1957: Dorothy Fall (2006) "Bernard Fall. Memories of a soldier-scholar" (Washington: Potomac Books) p80 and p111.
Cheers,
Bertie

That saves me having to pull Dorothy's memoir out then. Ta.

I would heartily recommend Windrow's The Last Valley. I recently re-read it and – again – found it enthralling and informative.
