would it make any difference to the game to increase the size of a cavalry unit from the two bases to three bases ?, not happy with the two base look

any advice or help appreciated

Although not an expert on the rules, I just play a few games, I would say the 3 stand horse unit would stand around in a melee longer, and be less vulnerable to fire.

It would probably work if you counted the 3 stands as 6 figures rather than the 9 actual figures.

I will be interested to see what other people think?-particularily those who can find their rule book!!!

Yes, the number of bases do make a difference within the rules, unless you make allowances.

3 stand cavalry would start with an extra d6 over 2 stand cavalry and foot in melee/close combat. Also, your maneuver column depth, in the rare instances you use that formation, would be way off.

Dragoons are 2 stands as cavalry, but 1 stand when dismounted; your larger dragoon units will need to be accounted for in the shooting phase.

Of course, as Barry has written before, you've bought the rules, now play them as you see fit and as you can get your opponents to agree to.

For me, I would elect to treat 3 stand cavalry as 6 figure units on 2 stands, with the extra stand just for show.

What really matters though, is how many figures the unit is comprised of on the roster, not how many are physically based with the unit.

There are a few other nuances with having an extra stand, but it really is up to you as to how to play the game with your mates.

I run eastern style cavalry units as 3 bases of 2 as opposed to western style cavalry which is 2 bases of 3. The extra dice in the first round of combat doesn't throw the combat off by an awful lot. So i wouldn't worry too much about it, what would make a larger difference if they are 3 bases of 3, then all of the issues above come into play.

If you don't like the look of 2 bases of 3 alone, just always group them two and two, the unit is a squadron, so there is nothing stopping you from having two squandrons always togeather. that what you have 12.
