I have run the Wyoming Massacre as a TSATF skirmish game several times, both for the locals and on the road. A good time is had by all.

The last time, I added the condition that the political careers of the American players after the war depended on what they did, and perhaps more importantly, what others saw them do. This was a step up from the mere "Run away!" game that I ran before, and it turned out very differently. grin
One guy was delighted to get himself wounded twice, which I ruled a "kill". He died heroically, and got a whole town named after him, and not just a street or gold course!

Yes.

Around here that would be rush hour traffic. I participate in true to life reenacting including real life terror daily.

IUsedToBeSomeone05 Apr 2014 9:46 a.m. PST

Yes – war of the worlds ..

I live in Woking 1 mile from where the first cylinder landed..

darthfozzywig05 Apr 2014 9:58 a.m. PST

I should run the Rodney King riots wargame.

Personal logo Jeff Ewing Supporting Member of TMP05 Apr 2014 10:02 a.m. PST

I *should* because there was a pretty good AWI scrap not far from me on Staten Island. I could put it on for the kids in local schools. I can't be the only one, however, who is reluctant to start a new period.

Pizzagrenadier05 Apr 2014 10:04 a.m. PST

Yes, our club played Gettysburg last year for the 150th anniversary. The club is in York PA and Gettysburg is next door.

I guess we could game a closer scrap for the ACW if we gamed the attempt by the Confederates to capture the bridge at Wright's Ferry. Though that would be a short battle and would mostly involve rules for fighting fires. Part of the world's longest covered bridge was set on fire by PA militia to deprive it to the Rebs, but the fire got out of hand (who knew?) and the Rebs tried to put it out. The Susquehanna is as far as they got.

Knight of St John05 Apr 2014 10:05 a.m. PST

Yes, I would like to game the battle of Loose coat Field (Empingham) from the War of the Roses. It's just up the road.

doc mcb05 Apr 2014 10:08 a.m. PST

I've done Chickamauga a good many times. And I have taken groups of kids who have played it tabletop to the real terrain, to appreciate how reality differs.

Coyotepunc and Hatshepsuut05 Apr 2014 10:10 a.m. PST

I am sadly not well enough versed in local history to know if there were any battles in Las Vegas… possibly Spanish vs. Hualapai? I would enjoy running that, if Hualapai would have a chance at winning.

Ron W DuBray05 Apr 2014 10:19 a.m. PST

only if you count the map battles of the city I used to live in as battles that took place where you live. there were no real battles there. but 50+ miles north there were a lot of AWI battles Fort Ticonderoga&Crown Point, Fort Ticonderoga 2, Crown Point2, Freeman's Farm, Lake George, Saratoga, Lake Champlain, ETC ETC. and I think I played them all in one form or another.

M C MonkeyDew05 Apr 2014 10:21 a.m. PST

Yes. Refought "where's the remote" and "Woman, where's my (insert just about anything) many times.

Sadly they always end with me losing : )

Fat Wally05 Apr 2014 10:21 a.m. PST

Yes. I've hosted Cheriton 1644 several times which is 15 miles away from me and Winceby 1643 when I then lived a dozen miles away.

I certainly do --- played battle of Nashville WITH European intervention. Here is the story: PDF link

I have actually gamed Dutch sailors landing to look for seabird eggs and being attacked by the locals.

thosmoss05 Apr 2014 10:31 a.m. PST

When wanting to build a zombie town, I was stumped trying to think of a theme for downtown. One day while in our local down town area, I finally looked up. Add in some memories of closed stores, and we had:

Hobby Store
Record Shop
Gun Store
Mortuary
Park filled with creepy vagrants
Hotels filled with creepy vagrants
An alleyway just dripping with character

After that, it all fell together quite naturally. The Stanley statue from the movie Cars still stands in as my substitute for General Palmer, city's founder.

Lee Brilleaux Fezian05 Apr 2014 10:47 a.m. PST

I live on a site – a church founded in 1734 – where a portion of the Continental army camped, and where Major Andre was held after being captured (okay, that was at a tavern across the road, where there's a medical office now). There are supposed to be graves under the parking lot.

Not really, no.

Coyotepunc and Hatshepsuut05 Apr 2014 10:57 a.m. PST

@TNE2300, thank you so much. I have read quite a bit about the Nexican-American War and had never come across anything about the Taos Revolt or the Battle of Las Vegas.

Today is a good day, something new was learned :-)

Dr Mathias Fezian05 Apr 2014 11:08 a.m. PST

I live near a lot of ACW era Missouri-Kansas border war sites. Nasty stuff though (not that any conflict isn't), not sure I want to game it.

Brian Smaller05 Apr 2014 11:14 a.m. PST

It would have to be pre-European inter-tribal massacres or later Land Wars where I live.

Cold Steel05 Apr 2014 11:16 a.m. PST

The closest I could come is a zombie game, since my town is where most of "Walking Dead" is filmed. I could run the Burning of Atlanta, but that is not a popular theme with the locals.

Personal logo Saber6 Supporting Member of TMP Fezian05 Apr 2014 11:20 a.m. PST

I would but the were a tad one sided (fetterman and lbh)

Personal logo optional field Supporting Member of TMP05 Apr 2014 11:24 a.m. PST

I've always wanted to do the Battle of Atlanta (particularly since I am a Yankee) but I've never had the chance. OTOH, I've done modern or future skirmish games based on neighborhoods I've lived in.

Inkpaduta05 Apr 2014 11:49 a.m. PST

I will soon. The Dakota War of 1862.

Dynaman878905 Apr 2014 11:56 a.m. PST

Only nearby battle was between a sub and a shore batt in Cape May. Trenton counts as somewhat close though.

warwell05 Apr 2014 11:57 a.m. PST

The nearest battle would be Pine Island Ridge during the 2nd Seminole War – link

I have never gamed it although I have re-enacted the war.

David Manley05 Apr 2014 12:31 p.m. PST

i used to live between Biggen Hill and Kenley (and I flew gliders at Kenley in the school holidays) – and I've done plenty of Battle of Britain games. I guess that counts.

And I live pretty close to Berkeley – haven't done the civil war siege yet, but thinking of doing the battle of Nibley Green (1469) sometime :)

Oh, and where we live now is probably just about on the site of the battle of Cwatbriege between the Saxons and the Danes so I ought to think about doing that one too at some point

vtsaogames05 Apr 2014 1:10 p.m. PST

I have run Long Island once – very one sided. One of these days I'll do Harlem Heights. Kips Bay does not seem a good candidate, considering the Rebels fled before the redcoats got into musket range.

Perhaps I'll do White Plains.

A bit further away, I've played Trenton once and Princeton numerous times.

Can't find a battle that took place directly in Corlears Hook. I suppose some thuggery took place here during the draft riots. Otherwise it would just be clients and hookers fighting over prices in Olde New York.

Mako1105 Apr 2014 1:21 p.m. PST

Not currently, but guess I could for places I've lived, and am living now.

So, that would permit:

Indians vs. Settlers in the "New World"
Revolutionary War
Civil War – land and naval combat
Cowboys/Settlers vs. Indians, Mexicans, and each other
Prohibition
Cold War – nuke missile silo(s) nearby, as well as an Air Force base – if only someone would produce the needed Soviet bombers, e.g. Bear, Bison, etc. in 1/300th or 1/600th scales; plus the requisite SAMs, e.g. Nikes, Bomarc, etc.
Drug and Gang Wars

zippyfusenet05 Apr 2014 1:22 p.m. PST

I've played several scenarios set within 150 miles of home: Point Pleasant 1774, Monongahela 1755, Olentangey 1782, Blue Licks 1781(?). Lots of action nearby from RevWar – WO1812, but no pitched battles exactly in my back yard.

Oh I get it!

No. I've never lived any place where a battle I care about took place. I don't game the AWI and I don't recall any ACW battles in West Lafayette, IN or Hartford, CT.

Korvessa05 Apr 2014 3:25 p.m. PST

a Wild West skirmish involving Black Bart?

Arteis05 Apr 2014 3:42 p.m. PST

Yes, I've done a New Zealand Wars game based only a few kilometres away from where I live:

Here's my report on my 'Battle of Boulcott Farm' game:

San Fernando Valley in north Los Angeles. Closest I can figure would be the skirmish in Cahuenga Pass during the Mexican american war. Other option… Zoot suit battles of 1940's in downtown Burbank.

Roderick Robertson Fezian05 Apr 2014 4:23 p.m. PST

The closest "battle" would be the Mariposa Battalion vs. Indians in Yosemite, which saw the Indians re-settled far away. Not really much of a game…

Frederick Supporting Member of TMP05 Apr 2014 4:25 p.m. PST

No – largely because I don't think anyone ever fought here (Ok, skirmishes pre-1492 maybe) – there were a few small battles nearby, but they are in the wrong period

Yesthatphil05 Apr 2014 5:01 p.m. PST

Yes … I'm just down the road from Northampton (1460) and Naseby (1645) – it is good to help the heritage associations and to learn from their knowledge.

In the centre of England, battlefields are never too far away …

I'd have to game drug related gang shootings…

brass105 Apr 2014 5:28 p.m. PST

The Battle of New Orleans took place right across the Mississippi from where I live. I've never tried to game the main battle (hard to find people to play the British), but Jackson's night attack on the British camp at Villere plantation makes a good game. I've also done the 1862 naval battle, although that's pretty much a slam dunk for the Union.

Zoot suit battles of 1940's in downtown Burbank.

Does anyone make Zoot Suits in 28mm? grin

Toronto4805 Apr 2014 6:06 p.m. PST

Yes several battles in the War of 1812 that are very close to home The closest would be the American invasion of York ( Toronto) in 1813 where the actual battle site was about a 30 minute walk from where I grew up as a child

I actually played a game at Ft York which was built right on top of the final stages of the battle

Sergeant Paper05 Apr 2014 7:23 p.m. PST

I did zombie games and and Giant Ant Invasion games set in Texas while I was at school there.

I could do something local if I rebased my Hawaiians and painted up some naval types.

War Panda05 Apr 2014 7:31 p.m. PST

l havent yet but funny that you ask because that's exactly what I've been considering in the last few weeks. I'm from Athlone in Ireland but since Ive moved to Canada Ive become very nostalgic about my Irish roots and local history.
The town was the site of two battles in the late 17th century which I'd love to stage. I recently found this

The other and project which would be far more realistic would be restaging many engagments my Granddad led against the Black and Tans.

Yes. But the zombies refused to eat Justin Bieber. Professional curtesy I suppose. :-)

cheers

No, but I probably will start in another week or so.

Here's my report on my 'Battle of Boulcott Farm' game:

I used to live in Boulcott. The memorial to the 65th regiment was just at the end of the street.

Where I live now there is a restored Maori Wars blockhouse just down the road – The Cameron Blockhouse.

There is another one on the grounds of Heretunga College in Upper Hutt, that is just around the road from where I stayed when I was in Wellington.

Hi,

As i still lived in Frankfurt we did the battle of bergen (syw) and it is still our house battle. Our kindergarden made trips to the battlefield as the swimmbath was on the it. If we had a day out we went with elementary school to the saalburg which is the reconstucted part of the roman limes.I worked in the place were the 1848 riots took place next to the hotel were the peace of 1871 was signed. I walked everyday as a school kid over the battlefield of frankfurt of the french revolutionary war and medival peasant wars. Our own house was bombed and taken by US forces. The fassade in the street were i grow up had still bullet holes in hit. I was in shool in the school of anne frank and sat 4 years in her class room. I did my test for taiming in griessheim next to the terrain were the E-100 cassis was lying. As i moved to swabia, we did the battle of Ulm and Cannstatt were i lived next to the bridge.
As i lived many years in Aachen, we did Stollberg many many times. I lived actually in the street were the panther was knocked out. I did my time in the military in the place we the Natter rocket interceptor was tested. Run around the testing site 2 times every day. As i lived in bremen i lived in a house next to the champter HQ of the teutonic order. That was the time when i did a lot of northern crusade. As i lived in norther hollnad i collected the liberation of holland by canadian forces.
Now do i live in the fortress belt of antwerp and we you have the early battles of ww1 here. I live now in a house with was part of the belgian counteroffensive in septemeber 1914 and my street and garden was fougth over by belgian carabiner and german marines. ca. 20km away is waterloo and quatre bras. In the other direction is the scheldte river were you have the seabattle between the spanish and the seedogs, the british landing in antwerp. I work today im a house which was hit by a V2 and and has more than 400 casulties in its history of existance.

I married on the battlefield of waterloo…
All the things i encountered have i collected in tin…

Greetings and have fun
PS: i surly have forgotten the most.. But this is a good overview.
