Having just bought a battery's worth of limbers, (28mm) I find that the models come with a folded elephant cover strapped to the top of the limber box. The only painted example I've seen showed the cover to be black (gum coated?), yet I'm pretty sure I read that they were heavy duty white cotton and instead of being used to cover the gun at night (their intended purpose), more often than not they were stretched over the limber pole to make a tent for the detachment. Anyone care to hazard a guess as to the correct material/colour? |

Black gum coated or graying canvas? |

I would imagine that if the crew were using it as a shelter, they certainly would've gummed it. I'd go with black |

It was usually canvass (cotton drill) so a dirty white/cream color. Most likely it was filthy as well. It was usually not black. It was similar to a tent fly. Don |

Thanks guys, Dirty, off-white canvas/cotton drill it is! Tom, on a slightly related matter, what gauge Chart Pack tape are you using for the Perry gun teams? |

If you go to my blog, I have posted a pic from an exhibit at the Fredricksburg Visitor Center showing a model of a limber with canvass strapped on top of the limber chest. I think I have a real pic of one canvass somewhere I just can't find it now. Grrrr
