Hey Guys/Gals,

I am trying to make some woodland scenic trees and I have followed the directions on the back of the package using the Hobby Tack glue. This will not be sturdy enough to handle wargaming as the foliage is already falling off. What have you all done to rectify this issue? Any other ways of using these materials to make sturdy trees?

Thanks,

Victor

I've had success with non-scented dollar store hairspray.

If they're not sticking to the branches try a base of spray adhesive then build up layers using the hairspray.

I've never tried it but I've heard of some folks dipping the whole canopy into a water/glue mix and letting them dry but that seems pretty messy to me.

Anyone else?

I used hot glue and then dipped the whole lot in pva. They are strong enough to carry around now without dropping foliage.

Victor – I sympathise as I have had the same problem. Not only didn't HobbyTac keep the clump foliage securely in place, when I tried to add the loose scatter the PVA spray acted like Agent Orange and more fell off. I might give the hairspray idea a try.

I attach foliage clumps using superglue and then dunk the whole lot in watered-down PVA glue.

I decided not to use clump foliage on my Woodland Scenic trees. I use lichen instead. And I don't bother with gluing it on. I simply impale clumps of lichen on the sharp branch ends. The lichen can, and does fall off. But adding more is not a big deal for me.
I used to make trees from birch twigs. I glued on my lichen back then. I used white glue thinned with water. I placed the lichen on the tree and applied the undiluted glue to the end of the branch I wanted the foliage to stay on. I then added water to encourage the glue to flow down the branch. This method worked quite well for me.

You need to apply the Hobby-Tac glue and then WAIT before applying the foliage. The glue gets tacky only after sitting for. A good while. Don't worry about it drying out. It stays tacky for a long time.

I did try the whole dip in watered downed PVA and all it did was pull the stuff off of the branches while it dried over night. Now i have rock solid clumps of foliage stuck to the wax paper on my table.

I use the foam from figures packs
Cut into small prices and superglue onto branches
Then coat the whole lot in pva and dip in flock
Google shedwars and trees and you should be able to find the tutorial
Good luck

Wait for the Hobby-Tac to get sticky like Bede19025 says. it will go opaque when it is good and ready (almost no white). Then another secret is to let the Hobby Tac dry overnight before trying to spray the trees with anything. I use the Scenic Cement (or just watered down matt medium – same thing). You really need to spray the trees hard so they are dripping. This will help lock most of the bits of foliage together and keep if from shedding.

Another trick when spraying is to hang the tree armatures from a line (upside down held by the bottom of the trunk) and then spray them (outside works best because they can drip/dry).

The Hobby-Tac was a waste of time. I have now stripped off all of the foliage on trees I attempted to make and have started over. I bought some new glue sticks for my hot glue gun and a silicone based glue called E9000.
I tried the E9000 last night and I'm waiting for it to fully cure before I hit it with some cheap hair spray. Will let you know how it turns out. I will also try the hot glue gun tonight too.

Hurrumph.

Hobe-tac. Useless.

WS adhesive spray. Useless.

Hairspray, – knocked off whatever had managed to stick in the above process.

I will try the hot glue gun next, but good luck with the approved or suggested formulas above.
