Some good looks and analysis of the Russian Army's gear, as displayed in the Crimea, here:

A refreshing 'clean' look at the Russians in the Crimea……good links!

Pure facts, interesting info, no speculations. Sounds good to me ;)

All that neat new equipment, but they aren't Russian soldiers no they're "local paramilitary"

GeoffQRF03 Apr 2014 2:45 a.m. PST

…bought in local shops, apparently

Barin103 Apr 2014 3:46 a.m. PST

couple of links with more details on Ratnik equipment.

You can't buy all of it in any shops, but you indeed can purchase some of the clothes/footwear.

Looks rather good. :-)

You can't buy all of it in any shops, but you indeed can purchase some of the clothes/footwear.

Yes, I'm aware that you can buy a lot of stuff in shops that we wouldn't perhaps see in a western high street. It was more a poke at the Russian Foregin Minister who said that they were all local militia and everything was just bought locally.

Barin103 Apr 2014 4:07 a.m. PST

Actually it was Putin himself talking about local shops ;)
Don't think they're selling GPS positioners, helmets, flak jackets and AK yet (though I would certianly buy some stuff if it was available….)

GeoffQRF03 Apr 2014 4:26 a.m. PST

Lol!

I suspect Putin never shops in local shops. His 'local' shops may well have all of that for sale :-)

Cute. But that's not a real cat.

GeoffQRF03 Apr 2014 2:33 p.m. PST

Clearly a local defense dog. It just looks like a cat

They look very pretty. Not sure they can fight any better than they did in 2 Chechen Wars.

That "whooshing" sound you just heard was reasonable discussion going out the window as someone introduces petty jibes and sneers to a formerly worthwhile exchange of ideas.

Barin103 Apr 2014 10:52 p.m. PST

sorry if I've messed with your topic but to me a cat in uniform is better then "RUSSIANS ARE ATTACKING TOMORRRRRROW" posts that appear with frightening regularity in all other discussions for more than a month….

Private Matter04 Apr 2014 10:27 a.m. PST

This information indicating improvements is something that should not be lightly dismissed by western military analysts.

tuscaloosa04 Apr 2014 6:29 p.m. PST

I wasn't referring to your posts, Barin1.

How could anyone object to an armed cat?

Mako1104 Apr 2014 10:25 p.m. PST

Looks like an elite Spetzcatz (copyright 2014) trooper to me.

Milites05 Apr 2014 6:15 a.m. PST

Western military analysts are not going to dismiss this, neither are they going to get overly exercised that a force that consists of some of Russias best soldiers, are fielding 10 year old technology.

BBC analysis of troop buildups in western Russia:

link

Buildup of air power at Primorsko-Akhtarsk (photo taken 14 March):

picture

It's only a few aircraft, probably just a response to NATO deployment in Poland, or possibly with the intention of providing air cover for Crimea, if needed.

Buildup of troops near Belgorod (just north of Kharkiv):

picture

Not sure it really indicates much more than Russia claims it to be – a training ground in use (?)
