I've always thought that black tape was used to tape hair queues.

Was white also used (and by who)? Winter fashion? Parade?

Thanks in advance.

I've always assumed that they were black. That's the color that I used when I did some SYW reenacting. Never heard of white tape being used.

I never heard of tape color being a part of uniform, unless on parade. Here is just one example from a book about Russian army of the period. I will try to translate here:

"From the middle of the 20's a fashion on powdered hairstyles with queues came from Europe. Low ranks, before parades, had to.. wrap the queues with black leather tape, flower was used for white powder… In other times officers used any silk tape".

Elsewhere and in many places in the book it was stressed that on a campaign soldiers preferred not to use items required for parades.

I have read of colours used by the upper echelons. I reckon a general officer could be depicted in any colour(s) you fancy.

Thanks, guys.

Thought I might have recalled white tape being used.

Interesting! I've never come across any mention of any color of hair ribbon except black. It would be worth checking out contemporary portraiture to see if examples of other colors can be found.
