"top U.S. general in Europe is looking at options including moving a U.S. warship to the Black Sea and bolstering scheduled NATO exercises in response to Russia's annexation of Crimea, a U.S. defense official told Reuters on Tuesday. A small team of about 10 soldiers from an Army brigade could also head to Europe "very soon" to better prepare for a larger scheduled deployment this summer as part of a NATO response force. "This brigade combat team was already scheduled to be part of the NATO response force going this summer. And we're just looking
at ways that we can improve their deployment even more," the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity

10 soldiers? Man, I thought the selfie pic in support of Ukraine was bad, but this is just laughable

No, no, ten Soldiers and a ship. Maybe a minesweeper
if we still have any. GAZE UPON OUR MIGHTY FORCES AND DESPAIR, PUTIN! |

A ship, perhaps, if and when they make a decision, assuming they do, to send it back in. |

Problem is that Russia owns the Black Sea. There are more ASMs in range than an entire Carrier group has SAMs and AAMs combined. Sticking a warship in there is begging the Russians to take a shot at it. |

Its funny that you could call the Black sea a Russian sea
missles from Turkey will sink the entire Black sea fleet at anchor. |

"Its funny that you could call the Black sea a Russian sea
missles from Turkey will sink the entire Black sea fleet at anchor." Very true. And very irrelevant since Russian airpower could easily flatten everything of military value that Turkey owns. Its not the Black Sea Fleet you need to worry about. Its the Russian air force that rules the Black Sea. |

I think there is a damaged frigate, a destroyer, and a command ship. |

And their only conceivable purpose would be to get themselves sunk as a casus belli. |

Sounds like someone at the Pentagon is trying hard to "look busy." The US over-reaction to Russia taking back what had historically been theirs, and which was welcomed by a majority of the inhabitants affected, continues to baffle me. There really must be hidden agendas at work here. Cui bono? as they say in the courtroom. |

As a slightly humorous segway to the above, in 1981 I was on the USS King, DDG-41, and we were sent into the Black Sea. I wrote up some of that trip in my blog, "Stories of the Cold War." link Enjoy. |

I volunteer the LCS. Perfect ship for the job to show the flag, and isn't much of a loss if it gets sunk. Hopefully, they can remove the crew, and pilot it remotely, just in case the latter occurs. |
