well, picking the best Star Wars doodad is like picking a favorite child. In any event, we now have the full history of the lightsaber, from George Lucas himself. "The whole premise of Star Wars was that it was a romantic fantasy," the director says in the featurette Birth of the Lightsaber. "So in developing a group of peacekeepers who were above everything and honorable and could make decisions and bring peace to the galaxy, I needed a weapon that was appropriate for those kinds of Jedi."

I always liked his original original take on Light Saber, which, IIRC, was that a Light Saber was actually a Force focus which allowed a Jedi to generate a beam of pure Force energy, which is why it could cut through anything and block anything. This was the signature weapon of the Jedi because only a Jedi could use one. However, since people thought Light Sabers were so cool, he just kept adding more and more of them until you had the absurd General Grevious and his Slice-o-Matic Blades of Spinning Light Saber Death

For those of us who don't despise the Jedi, I suppose. I also kind of have a hard time seeing lightsabers as iconic. It's a weapon, sure. One used by hardly anyone in the SW universe, as opposed to something like the YT-1300. Now those are iconic :D :D |
